Saw this story on The Inquirer. Apparrently the scheme's getting further delayed and it's possible that emissions tests may be dropped from the automated system entirely. I wonder if there's any truth in that...? If so, that would help those in the 'community' with decats!

The entire MOT structure is changing. The hand written MOT certificate will be fazed out and a computer printed "reciept" will be produced instead. The system was originally launched with the emissions check to part of the computerised test-this, as you say has been dropped due to all the MOT stations using different gas analysers, some of which are not compatible with the hardware Siemens have produced.
The emissions check will still be done, however, data will be imputed manually into the computer-so no, it won't help the de-catted community, unless, ahheeemm your tester is "looking the other way"

In N'orn I'ron we have had the computerised MOT for a few years now as we can only get our cars MOT'ed in a government run centre as ordinary garages cannot do MOT's. The delay in rolling out the new system and converting the centre's to the new testing equipment as led to delays of up to 12 weeks at some centres just to get a test date.
Windyboy.
PS my car failed the MOT yesterday as rear brakes were imbalanced by 40%
