Default BP Ultimate....More like Ultimate CRAP

Had to fill up with BP Ultimate whilst driving through Burton Upon Trent due to being unable to find a Shell and what can I say. What a load of rubbish. Never seen so much activity on the knock link, was lighting up like a christmas tree. Have just had to drive around and get rid of half a tanks worth without coming on boost due to as soon as it started to come on boost it started detting.

Anyone else had this problem?

Yikes! Interesting. All the feedback I have heard from peeps with a KL who've tried BP ultimate seem to point towards increased knock activity, which goes as soon as they revert to Optimax. Don't think I'll be using that stuff on mine!! Thanks for the feedback Dave.

Yes, agree with you all chaps. Now read the humour in this weeks mag, it's either Autocar or Auto Express, with 3 muppets who obviously know absolutely nothing about cars, giving their opinions on how they noticed 'significant and dramatic' changes with their cars after putting BP ultimate in it. One lady says something like: 'My car was sooooooo much instantly faster with BP Ultimate, really huge improvement!' Really?

What this country needs is freedom of CHOICE with fuels, and that can only mean 95, 97 and 100 octane fuels, which our friends on here really need for their Jap Imports! A tiny island like Cyprus has these 3 grades, why doesn't 'not-so-great' Britain?

And besides, how can BP name a 97 octane fuel 'Ultimate'? Ultimate what? Surely ultimate would be 100 octane? British public getting mugged off again, me thinks!

Although agree Optimax is superior, I dont think Ultimate is "crap" - probably just as good as other SUL's (except Optimax)

Wonder if its carbon related det, ie cleaning additives cleaning coke from the pistons????

Bob?

Always found that my MY01 run really smoothly on BP Ultimate - RX-8 seems to like it as well - although the Mazda is nowhere near as picky about fuel as the Scoob was. The worst problems I had were with 2 fill ups of Esso Super - felt like the whole car was going to shake itself to bits - appalling stuff.

Nothing to do with scoobs but was talking to a Skyline tuner and he said most of his engine rebuilds are from cars that always used optimax....
I used to use optimax but used some Ultimate the other day and recorded much better fuel consumption but not spanked it properly on the ultimate, does not really makes much difference to me as the car is mapped for 97SUL

my MY01 WRX was mapped on optimax and when i was short i did the evil deed and put in some esso super. The knock link was lit up like a christmas tree.
Answer never use any petrol apart from optimax again.........does make journey planing interesting though (for petrol stations).

How come the skyline tuner was seeing probelms with otpimax could you elaborate.

Yours

I don't really notice a difference whatever petrol I put in (i.e. ultimate, optimax or normal unleaded). Can't say the car feels any better/worse with any of them.

Is it just the Jap imports that are a bit picky?

I ran a UK car (modded) on Opti for months, then had to put some nul in there.... CEL came on for a while, while the ECU adjusted the timing to compensate. Must have seen some reasonable det for the factory knock sensor to see it!

And yes, its much more of an issue on an import - more sensitive to poor fuel.

C2 - most tests show it does ave a range, so its not as easy is saying its 98 ron. It tends to have a minumum of 97, but some results ive heard as high 98's... Dealers cant remap your car, its an aftemarket thing. Many tuners offer this service and can vary from remapping your existing ECU, to piggybacking, or a whole new ECU.

Also seems to bot have a good shelf life, ie degrades reasonably quickly in terms of rating over time.

It's the only SUL near me (Ultimate) and iv'e never had a problem.

I would say that general engine condition has a big part to play.
