serious bull**** man, i think lads go around sayin certain performance cars need an engine rebuild after 50k as an excuse for not buying it or something! u cant put a life span on a turbo, depends on the car and more so depends on the driver(s) and its past abuse, simple as that, turbo cud last ya 10k or 100k!

It all depends:-
If you have not done the **** Oil Change it will have the life of merely 20,000miles (anymore and you are just dead lucky!!)
If you have a CockLink it will extend the life of your Turbo at least TENFOLD
Be aware of the InterCooler Heatsink problem, this will melt the turbine blades - unless you visit SN regularly and heed the advice by the resident experts!
Keeping the standard exhaust will reduce the Turbo life quite markedly, Subaru Designers don't know ANYTHING about cars, fit a CORTZ exhaust system for a free revving Turbo and long life
Treat the car with care, service it regular and you will be sending the original Turbo to the scrappy
Pete

Only those who want to be wound up get wound up ..... the rest just smile and enjoy the fun!
I'm on a crusade against all the poppycock twaddle thats posted on here, the Impreza has been proved to be one of the all time great reliable performance cars ..... but, visit ScoobyNet without a Bull**** Filter and you would be in no doubt at all that the engine will blow up any minute!!

150k (kms) on a VF23 regular synthetic oil changes and on stripping to inspect the little hairdryer, there was no more discernible play than on a unit that had done 20k (kms)
my little VF boosts to the 1.5bar mark on a daily basis
treat a turbo fairly and it will last
The scoob has to be the most reliable car i have ever driven (had 3 scoobs and 14 others) the scoob has never once left me stranded, even with a stripped gear (my bad launch technique) it still drove home and to the workshop, and thats the worst problem despite over 150kw atw on a GT, Scoobs rule
