Malfunction Indicator on 03 WRX PPP
Hey,
Having problems with my scoob, was on the motorway the other day and my malfunction indicator came on. (the orange/yellow looking lamp on the dash) I've booked it in to the dealer on wednesday for diagnostic checking but hope everything is ok. Should still be under warranty.., gonna check my paperwork now.
At the time the lamp come on I didn't have a lot of fuel in her, but not drastic the low fuel lamp hadn't come on yet. I've read other strings and all in all the outcome seems trivial. ie a faulty sensor or the ecu needs resetting.,...etc
Any idea's? Be much appreciated.

Fill it with fuel, restart the engine 5 times, and as long as CEL (check engine light ) remains off then it wil be OK.
The ECU will detect lean running and trigger the CEL.
As long as the fault is not permenant, (low fuel causing temporary lean running) it cancels after the 5th time the engine is restarted.
If it clears you shouldn't need to go to the dealers.
I had the same on a WRX demo and the mechanic simply started and stopped the engine 5 times, no more fault.
The car was low on fuel.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply,
have started it more than five times and the light is still on.
Seems strange, but the car feels no different, I mean I haven't booted it since this lamped up but everything seems normal.......
But yeah tried the trick of starting it multiple times.

Think the lamp is latched, once on it won't go out. Happened to me on M11 a few weeks ago just before engine change on MY03 STi. Dealer just reset ECU. Took 5 mins. Basically the ECU counts up events such as misfires. When enough have been encountered the lamp comes on. There was no fault present when I got to the dealers. Only time it's ever happened in 41,000 miles.

Had the same prob on an MY02, the CEL came on religiously everytime a mechanic touched the car (cam-belt, servicing etc ) - had to take it to a main dealer, they all stood around scratching their heads and saying helpful things like "that should'nt happen .. can't find anything wrong .." etc etc ... finally they reset the ECU and off I went - till the next time someone opens the bonnet that is ...

Mine (05 wrx) came on after doing the **** oil change (ie disconnecting the crank sensor) however it did go out after 5 starts. I think it's down to wether the problem originally detected is still present. Obviously with me it recognised the crank sensor was not working then after reconnecting and starting it several time recognised the problem no longer existed. That's if it's that clever..!
If mine stayed on continuously and I did't know the cause I'd getting the main stealer to check it out.

Well,
took it to the dealers and the malfunction indicator come on due the temperature sensor on the exhaust system. The guys reset it, ordered me a new one and said it may be a faulty sensor or just a 'one-off' and I should be able to leave it with them in a few days while I wait for the new sensor to arrive.
On the way home on the M25.......... it came back on, so def got to get it sorted........
Don't know if this is more common with ppp?
Thanks for your replys lads...
