Default Knocking sound

Hello. We purchased a WRX STI type UK, 05 model about 6 weeks ago. It was 4 1/2 months old when we got it. About 3 weeks after having it it developed a knocking sound which seems to be coming from the rear drivers side. This only happens when the car has warmed up and is going at very slow speed, say pulling onto a drive. At first we thought the spoiler was loose, haha. We now think it may be the brakes sticking or something to do with the suspension. It is booked in with the dealer this week but when they looked at it provisionally they couldn't find anything obvious, although they heard the noise. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and any thoughts on what it could be. BTW the car is fantastic apart from this minor problem! Thanks.

This sound like 'diff click'.

Does it happen on full lock..?

If so it's normal, there should be a reference to it in your drivers manual.

Thanks for the suggestion, but we don't think it's that. Once the car is warmed up and going slow it happens whether its on full lock or not. You can also feel a clunk when it happens too. The mechanics that came out to listen to it thought it sounded similar to a fault on the 02 model but weren't sure.

Jack up the back of the car then lower it back down, then go for a drive.
If the noise stops for a few miles then its probably the rear struts.

Had same thing on my 03 Sti but rear passenger side. It was a broken shock which was replaced under warrenty.

6 Months on and it has happened again

Hi, sorry couldn't reply sooner. We have the DCCD on auto, not too sure if the back end sits when braking, my other half thinks it does but i am not too sure. Sometimes the back end seems to clunk down when pulling away after braking. What puzzles me is that it was fine at first so it is obviously something not right coz it hasn't always done it. It is going in on thursday anyway so we will see what comes of that. Good job it is under warrenty. Anyone else noticed the relay on the wipers making a strange noise too, it has just started doing that as well when they are on intermittent will have to mention that to get sorted also. Sounds like its a right heap doesn't it, its not really its just minor niggles!!

Just another thing, what would cause all these problems mentioned in this thread. Broken shocks, strut problem etc. Just wondering if its a fault or something a driver has done. Just wondering if its my boyfriends driving haha!!

My STi is five months old - same noise as you. Took it to dealer who has ordered new rear shocks. Appeared to be a 'known problem' - no quibbles, dealer was first rate. Taking it in this Friday for the work to be done.
