If your engine blows will your insurance pay out?
Hi
If you have fully comprehensive car insurance will that cover an engine blowing, or does insurance only cover accidents? I assume car insurance does not cover "mechanical breakdown" such as piston melting or an engine blowing. Do any kind of warranties cover this? Can anyone recommend any third party reputable companies that offer warranties covering "major" problems? I am wanting to buy my first Impreza but there seem to be so many stories of unreliable engines that "pop" requiring £4k to get a second-hand engine replacement...making me a bit worried about going ahead with the purchase.
Thanks for any help and info.
Matt

If youre after a proper warranty (and its a subaru) then you wont beat the official subaru warranty. Will come standard on a new car for 3 years and can be extended for one or two years at a time. Official UK cars only with correct servicing schedules etc.
The others, insurance backed ones, are IMHO a pile of w@nk.
Motor insurance only covers you for accidents/theft/fire etc etc and is not a mechanical warranty.

Insurance will not cover mechanical breakdowns. Admittedly, if the car was stolen and returned with a blown engine, you might get that paid as a cost associated with the theft.
IIRC most third part warranties have a cap on the amount they'll pay out, generally less than £4k.
The standard UK impreza engine is not unreliable by any stretch of the imagination, in fact it is more reliable than many other second hand engines. However, you do have to remember it is producing a lot of power for a limited capacity, so it can become unreliable if (a) it's a Japanese import not either remapped for UK fuel or run on the right fuel + Octane booster, or (b) it's been highly modified, or (c) been slightly but badly modified, or (d) has been generally abused (poor servicing/ thrashing when cold etc).
