use optimax + octane booster (millers,NF Race etc) until you can get a replacement remappable ecu. Also recommend investing in a knocklink to monitor for Det

fine choice by the way

If it's an STI5 Type R (MY99) then yes the standard ECU can be remapped (Tek3). I think everything older than MY99 needs a new ECU, but then an Apexi Power FC is similar money to a Tek3 - around £750.

Hard to say, the mapper should be able to increase the boost/fuelling to get more power - it's hard to give an exact figure. The main benefit will be safer running (no det) on 97 octane fuel, and if the mapper's good then it should run much smoother (and maybe more economically) too.

To give you an idea, an STI5 should be around 280bhp standard (on jap fuel). I had a de-cat, K&N cone filter and Tek3 done on mine and it went up to 320bhp. Also that's on Optimax with no det. A decat and Apexi ECU should be somewhere in that region.

Have a look here:

cheers man, yeah suppose that wud probably be a good idea £750 power fc supplied fitted and mapped, not bad is it..il look into that, probably worth the travel over from ireland..no real scooby specialists here that have a rep..shes type r v4...apexi power fc prob the best choice by the looks of it

My STi Type-R V5 is standard apart from a full de-cat and is pushing out 330bhp on 100octane fuel.

I'll second that. Before I went Apexi my V5 made 320bhp with only a decat, not had it on the rollers since but feels pretty samey.

Carefull, you might wake the sleeping PSLewis monster, who will sweep down from his cave and burn us all with his throat mounted flamer kit.

If we get on our knees and start praying now, we might get away with only sacrificing a MAF.

That was with 98 ron (Optimax) and mikkers octane booster. 97 and booster should be close enough but get the knoclink like every one says. Could save you a lot of hassle.
