Distinct Differences?
Hi Guys,
I am still looking in to buying a scooby and reasearching them but was wondering if some of the real knowlegable guys on here can help out.
Basically what I am trying to find out is, what are the real distict differences between the 2000 Turbo, the WRX & the Sti (Ideally in the 1996 Model as this is what i'm after.)
All help will be much appreciated.

Japanese market cars generally have a better spec than the UK cars of the same year. The WRX is the basic turbo model in Japan and the STI is the top of the range.
The 1996 UK Turbo is 208 bhp as standard.
Oh and yes there are loads of people who know a lot about Scoobs. Try a search and you should find most of what you want to know, as its all been asked before.
Members gallery is a good place to start.

I have a Nov '96 (MY97) version 3 STI and the differences from a standard JDM WRX are: Higher revving (8,250 rpm) stronger engine. Lightweight panels, including bonnet and boot. Close ratio gearbox. Pretty pink badges!
Basically, the WRX will do 0-60 around 5.5-5.8 I believe, the STI version 3 (MY97) will do it in around 4.5, however the type R/RA's are around 4.3 secs as they are even lighter, normally no air con, ABS, sound proofing etc, plus an even closer ratio gearbox. The version 1/2 STI RA's are not quite as quick as the 4 door version 3 STI, but it is hardly noticeable. If it's out and out acceleration you want, go for the STI saloon, any version and you won't be disappointed.

As an Sti owner, can you tell me if they have a 6 speed box, I heard somewhere they did and also how have you found servicing etc with Subaru, I read that they don't like to touch imports!

From: Kent in a 396bhp Scoob/Now SOLD!
I had a TypeR in Kent.
The 276BHP thing is a 'official limit' in Japan for performance cars. Dont put too much credit in it as all JDM performace cars claim it:
EVO's, Skylines, Supras, 300ZX's etc.. It really would be huge conicidence
The STI over the WRX of the same year.
Stronger crank
Bigger valves
Red Inlet Manifold
Bigger Intercooler & Pipes
bigger Injectors (440's)
Better Turbo (Dependednt on year)
Electronic center diffs on TypeR and RA.
Better brakes on V4 onward.
Better Suspension, Including struts, springs, Alloy wishbones and (V3 on)solid front drop links
Better seats (just red bits really!)
I had a modified STi4 Type R, with lots of uprated parts on it for three years. It was great to drive. The only reason I sold it was because it was time to move on to something newer.
Dont be put off by the WRX. A guy near me has got 322BHP from his, still with the standard intercooler and ECU. But I think his car is a 'lucky' one.

From: 1600cc's of twin scroll fun :)
The major differences between the STi and WRX is mechanical, its just a better thought out car, uses forged items over cast, better intercooler, different ecu map, diffs etc, so you are getting on average a better all round car, plus they normally have quite a few goodies standard over the WRX (intercooler waterspray for one) but dont write the wrx off, its still a good car, though mechanically similar to a UK turbo, the UK cars were not quite a tuned due to emissions etc.
