From: West Sussex-Scoob stripped :( Hello Audi A6 4.2V8 Quattro :)
Talking TESCO 99 RON !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well after having my car mapped to Shell optimax over the last couple of years, I went to one of the few sites in the UK, TESCO in THREE BRIDGES, CRAWLEY, to try their 99 ron.
I think it was 88.9p a litre if my memory serves me well ?
I must admit no activity on my knocklink what so ever, so I guess I will be converting, (best go and get the reward card!)

Anyone else tried it?

Cheers Kev.

i filled up with this for the first time at the weekend. must admit i've not noticed much difference over 98 ron. i guess that i'll need to run a few tanksworth through before i can get a true indication of what it's like.

Excellant news, I've just moved to Copthorne so I'll be giving 3B's a go on my next fill-up.

Thumbs down

Why o why o why are people still questioning this????

If someone see's something that maybe of use to others then they will probably post it on here. I cannot believe I am still reading posts regarding this and people are like 'are you sure' FFS!!!

Perhaps its a big conspiracy and its all made up because people have nothing better to do??? Or maybe its just some decent people trying to help out others.

Its *extremely* irritating.

From the other thread Tesco's were quoted to say that if take up is good in the trial areas. Then as LRP is phased out, the pump that used to have that will become 99RON.

I understand (from talking to the staff at Sevenoaks) that Tesco will roll it out over the whole country if there is a good reponse. So far it has far outsold the LRP that they will replace with 99.

The car likes it (1 1/2 greens on the KL at 6.5k) so lets keep buying it - I'm sure the rest of the country will be pleased

The only thing that bugs me about this Tesco's 99 Ron fuel - is that at the end of the day it's still supermarket fuel. They are selling it a good 4 or 5p cheaper in my area than Optimax so surly they have to be leaving something out to be able to sell it cheaper.

Or is it a case of Tesco's selling the same stuff only cheaper to draw in more customers ?? Does anyone really know if this petrol is as good a quality as Optimax ??

Or it could be that Shell are just charging a premium over and above what it costs. Just to cream in some extra cash.

When it comes to marketing and pricing it is very difficult to cut through to the facts. Tesco also have no fuel advertising bill, unlike Shell that have used Schumacher...now that will have cost ££££

Shell have been know to make a few quid you know...
I quote:

The group made $17.5bn (£9.32bn) after tax in 2004, partly due to the soaring price of oil.

And Optimax no doubt..

My thought exactly.

Is there anyone out there in the know as to exactly which supplier this comes from? In other words, what petrol is it really?

Does it have detergents to same standard as Optimax?

Lot's of people have said there's no or little Knocklink activity which must be a good sign.

Optimax is still 89-90p round my way, so I'm not changing unless it's proved to be better quality.

I have to say my Stage 1 Astra GSI Turbo reacts to the Tesco 99 ron stuff in the same way as it does to Optimax. Acceleration feels sharper and the car runs smoother than on BP Ultimate or Esso SUL.

I guess im really just wandering if the "extras" that were supposidly going in with the Optimax - i.e all the additives that make it one of the better quality petrols really make that much difference in the long run.

With regards price, Tesco can subsidise it with the revenue from their main business. If they have the cheapest petrol in town they have a good chance of attracting more people into the store who will then spend on other stuff. Just the same as them offering a widescreen telly for £100 or something - it gets people in the door.

It is noticable at my local Tesco they have gone to the trouble of moving the petrol station from right by the road entrance to the very far back of the car park. This is to put people off just dropping in for cheap petrol, they want you to park up and go into the shop as well whilst you are there.

As for Tesco petrol being somehow inferior - well they are just going to buy it from one of the main refineries same as anyone else and sell it on. There are no blue and white striped Tesco oil rigs floating around that I know of. May be a slightly different mix of addatives compared to Optimax or something but that is really a tiny weeny portion of the cost. Optimax is expensive because of marketing, not because it is way more expensive to refine!!

Wink

Shell's marketeers are cunning people - they want their petrol to be reassuringly expensive - so people like you, Jeremy Clarkson and Michael Schumaker all know it must be good

its called a complementary product.

Something that doesnt make you directly go there but works with what you are buying.

I just saw it at TESCO near Camberley (The Meadows) - 84.9p! Manager told me it was introduced about 3 weeks ago (exclusive to TESCO etc, meant for sport cars, etc, very green, etc - shut up! Mind you, I was filling up the family "run-about", with normal stuff).

Optimax in this area is 91.9p! I will definitely try it, carefully!

Surely one of the "big" names will be supplying this shortly!?!?!

After all...Tesco don't, as far as I know, own any refineries, so someone is making this stuff for them and I can't imagine they are making it solely for Tesco without anyone else wanting a bit of the pie.....and I can't imagine Tesco affording there own special fuel being 'brewed'!

Shell V-Power 99/100RON on its way maybe?
