Default Auto 'black' button and dash 'power' light

In front of the auto shift lever is a mysterious black button, well it's mysterious to me anyway. What does it do? My guess it is an auto 'power' kickdown selector? (rather than manual selection).

I pressed mine a few times during one of the times my car actually works, now when I kick down, the power light comes on. Normally this was manually selected by pressing the button on the side of the lever. Now I don't really mind this behaviour, the thing is, I can't seem to turn it off.

isnt the button in front of the shift lever to allow you to move the shift lever out of P when the ignition is switched off?
