How long can you go hitting the fuel pump to start your car?

How long can you go hitting the fuel pump to start your car?
I have come across a bit of a problem where I thought my alarm and immobiliser had packed in.
Turns out it is the Fuel Pump as when i hit the back seat and turn the key, the car starts with no problems whatsoever.
I got a mate to price a fuel pump for me and I am looking at least £269 ex Vat just for the pump. I dread to think how much labour is going to be involved and what overall price I will have to pay.
It is a MY94 Classic Import and its really making me think about selling it but really do not want to!
Has anyone had any similar problems???

speak to alyn he is called stockcar on here, you can have an uprated fuel pump from him for £100 delivered next day! Not much labour at all, remove the back seats, take the cover off the fuel pemp (the one on the drivers side. remove fuel lines (hardest part!) remove old pump, fit new pump and away you go!

I know of two people who had similar problems.
Personally, if I had to bang it once, I would be replacing it. There's no way I would want to be stuck somewhere with a dodgy fuel pump.
Fitting is relatively easy. A Subaru specialist would charge about an hours labour max to fit one.

I had exactly the same problem on the way back from a footie match. it was so embarrasing tried hitting the fuel pump, still would not start. got the car recovered by the AA and fitted the fuel pump myself a couple of days later.

ring mark at lateral performance for your fuel pump
020 8420 5444
labour is probably more like 30 mins.
You could do it yourself almost with your eyes closed.
5 bolts on the back seat,
4 screw on the tank cover,
then 8 nuts to take the cover off the tank which holds the fuel pump.
Very very easy.

And you're right about the time Adam. Unfortunately, most charge you in full for the first hour of labour.

When it comes to fitting uprated fuel pumps I always worry about sparks down there in the fuel tank if the electric connections have not been done well. Can't be much of a problem as the fuel gauge sensor is 'open contacts' and als 'cos my car has not blown up yet.

Yeah I agree, thanks Carl - point taken.
The car was needed for tomorrow but I have arranged for a different means of transport.
Jon thanks as well for the PDF, just need to decide what fuel pump to go for.
My mate was saying there are 2 types for an imported Impreza? Is this correct? Want to order it today to be honest so I can get the car back on the road for the weekend.

Are you going for an aftermarket one?
Most people tend to go for the uprated Walbro/FSE 255 lph option although there are others that will fit.
I'm not sure what you mate was describing as 2 types (It's not my department to know). Maybe he means 2 types of connectors.
Whereabout are you located? You may be able to walk in somewhere and buy one if you're near a specialist.

also- something that no-one else has mentioned:
b certain you get a perfect seal on the tank when refitting the lid.. the gasket can be a swine to line up perfectly..
if you dont get it spot on, you can damn near gas youself with petrol fumes, or even a create a small fuel leak if you have a full tank and corner hard ....
also be gentle with the nuts on the tank cover.
dont go mad with a huge wrench/socket.. they only need a tiny amount of torque.
You wouldnt want to strip the thread now

If you're hitting the back seat to get the pump to work, it could be the connector/wiring that is at fault.
Not had this problem myself, but have read of several instances of intermittent fuel pumps being caused by the wiring under the back seat melting! The connector is under the drivers side of the back seat. Maybe worth a check before buying a new pump?

Some good points there.
When you think about it, there could be a wiring issue or the time has finally come for a new fuel pump.
I am based not far from glasgow and to be honest I think my mate priced that pump from Subaru but trying to get it a trade price for me.
What a weight off my shoulders posting on here!!
I appreciate the feedback guys as it has given me a number of steps to persue.
If I go for an upgraded pump is there much difference to that of a standard one?? Bare in mind I aint a mechanic!!

STOP!!!!
It probably is NOT your fuel pump!!
Take the back seat out and look at the wiring - this is a very well known problem area, the connector gets corroded somehow and the connection gets very dodgy.
I am guessing that a small re-wiring job, with new connector (Maplins)? or even a Chocolate block - for about 20p - would solve your problem!
Pete
ps, just noticed that DaveD has hit it already - check the connector!!
