New and Need some HELP!!!
Hey All,
1st Post so I would like to say hi to one and all. Although 1st post have been visiting quite often as I am in the process of sourcing a scoob. It will be my 2nd car which at present is a clio 172 Cup but now want something with a little more gunt.
I have looked on the search for the information I want but although there is a lot of info there, I would like a decent comparison of certain models.
So to the question, I prefer the look of the classic and think I have whittled it down to STI V type R, RB5 or P1 - could you give me your pearls of wisdom in comparing these cars, in regards to perfomance (0-100, torque etc) handling and problems etc. If there are other models that you would recomend I consider please let me know.
Thanks very much
G

A little rude that no-one has bothered to reply
Welcome to SNet
Although I am no expert, especially when it comes to classics, you have selected 3 of the finest examples for your short list The STi V Type R will I believe be the quickest and more driver focused of the trio. The P1 was probably the best UK spec classic (except 22B's), and is only let down by frequent engine rebuild issues. The RB5 is closer to a standard UK Turbo, and I believe there are various models with or without some of the Prodrive performance mods, so choose carefully. Sorry I can't be more thorough.

The Prodrive performance pack (or PPP) increases power from 215bhp to around 240 and increases the torque to around the 250lbs ft mark IIRC. In terms of everyday driving it is the way the power is distributed over the rev range that makes the difference: basically it producess the power earlier and for longer. If you go to Prodrive's website you can download a PDf with the info on it there.
The Std UK Turbo 2000 is plenty quick enough for most, but the PPP is *very* quick indeed. You should be aware though, that when warranty isn't an issue there are bigger gains to be had for less money, without compromising reliability by going elsewhere. The principle advantage of PPP is that it's fully approved by Subaru and doesn't invalidate your warranty. Insurance can be tricky when you start to modify, PPP or otherwise, and these are very expensive cars to insure as std. Also bare in mind the ownership costs which will be larger than your 172.
Imports (e.g. Sti 5) offer the biggest bang for your buck, but you have to be careful what you buy or it might go bang literally! I wouldn't buy an import or a P1 unless it had been properly mapped for UK fuel.
Happy hunting.

Type R's are the rawest Scoobs around, used mine as a daily driver for 3 years and never felt so knackered due to driving
Personally I'd go for the RB5, UK car with a great reputation and dealer back up

Then the Type R is for you, rear wheel bias, DCCD, no ABS and 100% involvement

1) Use SUL WITH octane booster, get a Knock link and keep an eye on it!
2) Have it remapped for UK fuel...also a good idea to have a Knocklink too.
You really want one that has had one of the above from the moment it was imported. Look for as lightly used as possible with as few owners as possible. Full service history for the time its been in the UK is a MUST as is a full independent inspection by a specialist. If you're going the trade route, then there are a number of very reputable specialists on here. Do a search.
Happy hunting.
