Fastest Impreza estate?
Howdy -
I have a 1996 standard UK turbo estate - it's a grand car, but compared to the speedier models it's not so much fun on racetracks. The seats don't hold you in very much, the suspension is a little sloppy and the brakes are hopeless (it's got the 2-pots). I was intending upgrading all these things, but then it occured to me that I might as well just buy a similar-aged STI estate.
Things came to a head last Friday when we spent four hours on the M1 in the sweltering heat... my car doesn't have air conditioning, and my mrs spent the entire time grumbling about it. I'm pretty sure the STI has air conditioning, so now I'm reckoning I can sneak one of these through and pretend I did it all for the wife to get air conditioning. Cunning huh?
What I'm wondering about: Is the 1996-1999-era STI the fastest Impreza estate? It's my belief that since then they haven't made another STI version, but are the current WRX ones actually quicker than the old STIs? I don't want to modify the car at all if I can help it, so I'd rather have a standard model.
Any help appreciated.

As far as I am aware all STI wagons are imports, they were never sold in the UK, and they are available in classic and newage shapes.
The classic shaped ones are probably the fastest, the newer ones are heavier due to the additional crash protection in new cars.

For the money you might end up paying for a rare JDM import it must be worth considdering a UK with air con and perhaps modding it gently with the money you'll save ?
