It needs to come off to fit the mount, but after that you can attach and detach the hook without touching it. Have one on my MY03 STi and that works a treat.

Mine didnt either!

You do have to remove a few brackets including taking off an exhaust hanger, fit tow bracket and then put exhaust hanger back on

I fitted the genuine Subaru item with the removable swan neck bar. Quality bit of kit, recommended, fits like a glove. The rear bumper on my MY03 definately had to come off, no other way. I fitted it myself - it comes with very comprehensive instructions.

Sorry to hijack, but do the instructions show you how to fit the swan neck, I'm still having trouble getting mine to engage so that I can remove the key. I can get it to lock in, but can't seem to get the key out.

Allan

Put a big splodge of grease or vaseline on the end of your swan neck and the lock should snap shut easier. Just give it a few pulls in and out to get it well lubricated and you'll find it'll glide in and out easily.

Yes i was talking about the towbar

Right it's now got more grease on it than a very greasy thing and I still can't get the key out.

see picture......if I turn the **** clockwise from here it releases the neck, I'm guessing it's got to rotate more anticlockwise before the key will come out....but it wont ?

Has the key been turned completely *anti-clockwise when you have turned the "****" as far *clockwise as possible? and took up the resistance in the spring?

* or the other way round, i cant remember

Nice greasing up btw Allan, do you do it often but you really didnt need to grease the shaft

Have you really SLAMMED the arm up into the socket, then HAULED it backwards until it locks. If I remember right the colour window changes from red to green as the **** rotates - enabling you to turn the key and extract.

It was a problem first couple of times with mine - then I got the knack. Keep trying!

LOL........haven’t greased the shaft...honest

Will have another go tomorrow, I've slammed and hauled and it's definitely locked, it would be fine to tow with. Just can't get the **** rotated to the green section, which is presumably where the key will disengage.

OK, still no joy

This is how it looks before I load it into the socket, **** will fully rotate anticlockwise to the green section and the key can be removed.

Now when I insert it and lift up, I get a loud clonk and the neck engages, as in the picture below, but I cant rotate the **** far enough back to get the key out. I'm assuming this is fully engaged ?

Thanks WRBlu,
that's interesting especially as you say yours is also a swan neck, perhaps there's different types. AFAIK this is a Subaru genuine bar, it has Subaru on the plate in the picture.

When I get a chance I'll see if my dealer can help.

Subaru web site is showing two types, I guess you have the second one.
