Unhappy Oh Bugger!! Now I've Bust It!!!!

After 5 years the bloody alarm bracket has snapped - this is a well documented fault with these Sigma units, I know .... but, I thought I had one which was immune!

Apparently not!

While looking at the Boost Solenoid the alarm unit just 'fell off'

Photo here:-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...Picture151.jpg

What has everyone done to this unit to stop it rattling about??

Im pretty sure i have the same one Pete. Im sure mine gets driven alot more unsypathetically than yours (It gets ragged up the strip) and mine doesnt appear loose.

Probably irrelevant, im just surprised yours has come off!!!!!

Its a fault that I was aware of when I bought the car ..... I just thought after 5 years it would be ok forever.

Its a stress fracture where the bracket bends - a design fault!!

Anyone fixed it??

Get a straight strip of metal, and make a bracket, use the existing bolt on the alarm.

5 minute job (if you can find a suitable piece of metal)

Fixed!!

Photo to prove:- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08...ee/Picture.jpg

Used the old piece of bracket which snapped off, enlarged an exsisting hole in the bracket which holds the Boost Solenoid, drilled 2 more holes in the Alarm U Bracket to move Alarm closer to the U Bend .... so, it would fit in the space Air Cleaner Box to Solenoids. Bolted it all up ..... 20 minute job and alls well

Well, you would think so wouldn't you???

Guess what I found under the Intercooler?? ANOTHER dipstick!!!

Pulled it out, I guess its the gearbox?? Should there be oil on the stick??

Pete (Wishing he hadn't lifted the bloody bonnet this morning!!)

Green!! Green!!

I bought it NEW - I had a choice!!

Green and MicaPink were OUT ..... Silver was the one really, but I had just had 7 years with a Silver Calibra and 2 years with a Silver PrimeraGT .. so the Blue was the change

Anyway, yes, I think thats where transmission oil should be

Don't think a 76 year old couldn't go round as fast as you kiddies!!

You would have to be careful as you lifted me aloft as I celebrate the lap record mind you - my bones are brittle!!

I thought you had a mint condition immaculately kept classic. It looks filthy under the bonnet and you are bodging around drilling into bits under the bonnet without consulting the dealership!! Oh My God
This will only be worth the £7000 that all the other botched around classics are now. Also wagon is the one that depreciates most anyway even without this kind of butchery.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah ............ this Impreza is now maintained by one of the countries finest Design Engineers - not many can claim the power of that brain applied to it!!

So, what have we here? a ONE OWNER Blue Impreza Turbo which has been driven with the sympathy of an Mature Engineer, serviced by Subaru for 5 years, never raced, never tracked, rarely taken above 3000RPM, brake pads still original after 58,500 miles, 38 mpg, run-in absolutely to the letter ...... yeah, I can see how its just worth what the usual crappy, modded, clapped-out classics are

I'll take my chances with the buyers come re-sale time, thanks all the same

Pete

ps. the local dealer offered me £9150 .... sight un-seen, he was begging for an un-molested one to come along to him, he's not interested in the usual dross .........

PMSL He'd better be careful or his engine might blow up!! Taking out the dipstick could be dangerous...... I now expect to see a 500+post thread on "Which transmission oil should I use...?"

Mine has done 53000 miles with only a scoobysport backbox as a mod. it is also looked after by a design engineer so it should be worth more than yours and its a saloon

My ickle brain is finking.
Hmm, our revered design engineer has only just discovered the transmission dipstick.
Did not his supplying dealer, as mine did, point this out to him upon handover of the steed?
Did not pslewis avidly devour the contents of the owners manual as I did?
Finally, every engineer I've ever known couldn't resist exploring the engine bay of their new vehicle, locating all the components and finding unusual items.

and driven for an unknown number of miles with no oil in the gearbox.

Every engineer worth his salt knows to check his oil, coolant and washer fluid between services.
