Take a look at http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm - there's a list of all the model codes, which you can find on the VIN plate under the bonnet.
The quick way, though, is just to look at the engine - the STI has a red painted intake manifold. The paint doesn't withstand the heat too well, though, so it'll probably be flaking off on a car that age. The STI also typically has an STI badge on the rev counter, an 8000 rpm red line, and STI logos on the seats. The STI has a distinctive spoiler too, though there are so few cosmetically standard cars around that it's not a reliable way to tell.

Get someone who Knows about WRX STI's if its not a fresh import?
I have seen in the past proper STI's with only 200bhp Legacy engines dropped in, as it a cheap way to replace a flat 4 blown engine and sell it on quickly to the untrained eye!!!!! (ps they also change the red intake manifold to make it look the real mcoy)
and it wont last long running on a sti ecu!

Two simple ways: from the outside look for the aluminium front suspension, no-one ever changes this on bogus STIs; if you can get inside look at the Applied Model Number on the build plate.

these STIs didn't have red inlet manifolds either.
