Info re:- "Whine" at 60mph on MY 03/04
I have just received a copy of the Subaru technical bulletin from a friend of mine at the local dealers, which outlines changes to be made to vehicles exhibiting the aforementioned problem.
You can view the bulletin as a couple of jpeg files here:-

Hope this is of some use folksl.

You can just about read them if you open the files into an art package or photo browser with a zoom function
I wonder if this would work on an MY98? I seem to get an awful low pitch hum/whine from the rear when cruising 60mph. So it would interesting to see if parts are interchangeable

Good luck at getting it fixed.
My car has had this issue from new. I've been to the dealer over 10 times, wasted over 5 days, had 2 new rear diffs, other things changed, had the fix stated in the bulletin applied and the issue is still there!
I've been assured the car is 100% safe, however I hate crap service. I've now decided to sell the car in a few months time even though I love driving it and buy a second hand 996 or 993. This will cost similar to a new STi, isn't ugly and the pig of an 06 model will kill the brand even more), have better MPG, cheaper routine servicing, very low depreciation, the interior isn't made from Airfix grade plastic and I'm sure it'll put a bigger smile on my face.
Subaru - wake up. **** service and overly high prices = lost customers.
