Look on www.sidc.co.uk for some info on model types!
As for a buyers guide, I'd say
1) Get it professionally inspected
2) Make sure it has a Full service history
3) Speak to the owners, no boy racers, people who run the cars on cheap oil, petrol or don't warm them up or cool them down properly
4) Don't buy a car that has been cheaply modded by a non-specialist outfit
5) Get a HPI check done.

As above for Classic shape scoobies http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm has nearly all the info you would ever need.
Then you have to make your mind up as the whether you want a UK spec. car or a jap import. The UK option has the fully dealer network backup, is designed to run on UK fuel, insurance is cheaper etc. etc. However with so many good specialists around now running an import isn't as difficult as it once may have been. Do be aware though that the jap cars are mapped to run on the 100 RON fuel they have there, in comparison Optimax is around 98. So a re-map to UK fuel is advisable on an import (if it's possible), failing that it must be ran on Optimax + octane booster to maintain a healthy engine. A Knocklink would be a advisable add on, as low octane fuel will cause knock on a jap car and this can destroy an engine pretty quickly if left unchecked. So long as you know what's involved imports are great, remember the Japanese get much better models (read more powerful ) than the U.K.

Similar situation to when I was buying recently, you may struggle to find anything good from a dealer for under £5K though - most I looked at were pretty tatty or had been badly modded / no service history etc...
If you can get a grand more, then there are more about, generally with a FSH so you know it been done recently, UK models for cheaper insurance, better looked after cars etc...
Be wary of imports as a lot are heaps that shouldnt be for sale at all - check out the dealers reputation before buying as there are some very unscrupulous ones about.
If buying privately, dont buy from anyone young or poor looking !!! seriously, as mentioned you want something that has been looked after, run on good oil and petrol and had things replaced or fixed when they needed it. A middle aged seller who has the scoob as their 'fun car' is a safer bet than some scally from the local council estate who couldnt afford to insure it and has a 'dodgy mate' who did the MOT's for him.
