The cars thieves like depends on whether they want to sell the stolen car to another drive or just go for a joyride.
Vauxhall Belmonts were the most popular cars with thieves in 2004, and the least popular car was the Ford Ka, according to the Car Theft Index 2004.
Cars thieves love
Professional car thieves looking to supply the used part market tend to target more popular vehicles, such as Vauxhalls, Fords, Citroens, Volkswagens and Hondas. These cars are unlikely to be recovered if they are stolen.
Joy riders have a tendency to target sporty models. These cares are usually abandoned and may or may not be in a driveable condition.
Thieves looking to resell a vehicle will target the luxury models.
Security deters potential thieves
Older cars are generally easier to steal than newer models as they tend to have poorer security devices. Cars built pre-1996 are at high risk of theft, those built after 1996 are low theft risk and cars built after 1999 are very low risk.
Car thieves have become increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to steal prestige models, which have the most hi-tech security systems. Professional criminals now target the car keys rather than the car to ensure their theft is successful.
There were almost 280,000 reported car thefts and a further 598,000 cases of reported theft from cars in 2003/04. If your car is a favourite with thieves, then your insurance premium is likely to be higher. If you’re looking at buying a car, get a quote on the insurance first to make sure you can afford it.

In the `cars thieves love` section only the S3/S4 cars seem to be sporty. Where are all the rest of the sporty car's that we do know get knicked. Seems a very strange list to me. Why steel a 106 XR, when the XSi and GTi are faster? Does'nt seem right to me.
