Impreza vs Evo 6
#3
Why do you compare the Evo to the U.K Impreza it isn't its rival and never was, this is why there is the STI6 with more power, different susppension tuning and a closer price tag.
What next the Ferrari is better than the Impreza or maybe a Mclaren F1??????

I preferred my EVO as a toy to play in but for day to day use, I prefer my STi. I hated the 13mpg in the EVO, this mean't filling up every 150-160 miles! At least the STi is slightly more fuel efficient.

Must admit I'm not not sure whether to spend 2 grand on the PPP for my W-reg UK car or trade it in for an Evo6? If I did get an Evo 6 would I probably want a Skyline or a 911 Turbo the following week?
Maybe I should pay of my loan first? Can you live in the back of a 911 turbo?

Compare like with like:
Price
UK Impreza £22,000
Evo 6 £32,000
Insurance
UK Impreza Group 17
Evo 6 Group 20
Service Intervals
UK Impreza 7,500 miles
Evo 6 4,500 miles
Petrol Tank
UK Impreza 60 litres
Evo 6 50 litres
Consumption
UK Impreza ~24mpg
Evo 6 ~20mpg
I'd expect it to be better, considering the extra costs of ownership involved!
Compare it with an STi Type R, that's more meaningful.

When I was looking for a new car - I did consider an Evo - stunning car, but I also knew that whatever I choose, it would need to be usable as an everyday car (I reckon I'll do approx 20000 miles a year).
For some of the reasons that David has posted, the Evo simply isn't practical (IMHO). The 'standard' Impreza Turbo is great all round car - very reliable, very quick, big enough for 4 people and their luggage if needed and the ride is firm without being rock hard (unlike the Evo).
If I was in a position to run two cars, then who knows? Also, as stated earlier, I think you've got to compare like-with-like. It is a huge compliment to the Scooby that it gets compared to cars costing 10 or 20 grand more.
The Impreza offers fantastic value for money and I won't be swapping mine.

I would never consider an EVO unless I had money to burn. I have a UK99 car.
I like the exterior looks of my car but I also like the EVO6 in Silver.
I like the interior of my car more than an EVO.
I have never had the chance to drive an EVO, but been driven in one.
I dont think across country (which is the place I spend most of my enjoyable drive time) it is any faster than a Subaru. The safe limits are similar. And my scoob sounds great.
Then the costs, I get between 18-24mpg each month. I am sure if I was in an EVO that would be closer to 12mpg.
Insurance group 17 v 20, big difference.
Service 7500 miles v 4500 miles
Warrenty 3 years 60000 v ? I am not sure.
Scooby wins hands down.

As a Scooby nut and sad as I surely am, I now have 2 Imprezas - an STI ver 4, for fun and a standard uk for the wife and kids (couldnt get the wife out of it anyway). This now covers all needs incl track days, long journeys etc.
Although the Evo I drove was fast and handled wonderfully, it is very harsh and running costs will always be more. I personally find the looks just too much - I agree with the lego comments as well. I dont really want the attention the Evo's get. Each to their own though.

I hope this message doesn't offend anyone because it's not meant to but I was the proud owner of a new W reg Impreza Turbo until I went for a test drive in a new Evo 6 at Ralliart in Dudley.Once I had spent 5 minutes in the Evo I realised how superior The Mitsubishi is in every respect, the Evo is so much Quicker, better built and handles like something I have never experienced before. It just oozes quality and makes the Impreza look like a poor cousin.I urge every Impreza owner to experience the difference.
I feel so lucky to be able to afford the car and love it to bits!

Hmm. Nice car yes but looks like someone stuck bits of Leggo all over it. Is the ride as harsh as all the reports suggest and is it really so heavy on fuel(assuming you can get some) ?
p.s. how much did you get for the Scoob?

Have to agree with Steve on all counts. The Evo outclasses the standard Uk Impreza turbo. It might have lego bits on it, but it sure seems to get a lot more attention than my Impreza ever did. I think this might have something more to do with the fact that they are less common that the Subaru.
However, although I really like the Evo, I seem to have a real affinity for the Impreza. I guess this is because it was my first ever high performance car and I remember my first experience.
WRT Phil's questions, yes the ride is pretty harsh although I do feel that I have got used to it. Fuel consumption is pretty poor.
Mitsubishi dealers are nowhere near as good as Scooby dealers either.

Not sure about the Evo 6 in particular but in general Mitsubishis are nowhere near as well built as Subarus. Out of all the Japanese cars - Honda are meant to be the best build quality, then Toyota/Nissan, then Mitsubishi. Subaru (much smaller than the previous 4 companies mentioned) are near the top.
You buy a car like the Scooby for the way it drives, not the way it looks so even though the Evo 6 looks like it has bits of lego stuck to it, this shouldn't put you off getting one. There are other factors mentioned on this thread however that might put you off.
I'm sure that there are people out there who are very happy with their Evo 6s. That's their choice but I'd personally get a Scooby any day (as long as it isn't the Justy).

Stef, I love it when you get all technical.
A guy at my offices has just got a nice new ralliart GSR had a good gander at the car as you can imagine. A few things that strike me
a) Quality of Product is alot higher than Subaru. Not just brand standard kit but the paint finish and the quality of the interior look better
b) The Evo is a little more discreet in its presence, ie more Q car status.
c) The Evo hasn't got the Max Power following of the Scoob, which has to be a good thing.
d) Made a friend from the Evo BBS who has the only RS450 in the country and I'm not talking the Evo 5 450 in Autocar his was an Extreme first........Gulp. My point being here that this is the type of Subaru I would love to be able to buy but you can't without going to specialist builders here and Ecus there and Suspension here. If Ralliart can do it why can't Prodrive.
I think I've gone mad..........dribble
PS watch out for the RS450 at Brands with a Smiling Mr Davies in the Passengar seat......whey hey.........

Here we go again.
What really gets on my **** is when people on this board have an opinion on something they have NEVER EVEN BLOODY EXPERIENCED!
Sooo many times people have come up to me with the bollox 'Active Yawn Control' and 'Rock Hard Suspension' and the good old Clarkson quote 'Halfords window' and they havent even been in the things yet!
I own a UK 97 Subaru and I also own an Evo VI. The Evo VI, is without doubt, the superior of the two. I dont care whatever anyone says, if you don't agree, come and see me.
The Evo is:
a) Better built that the Subaru
(whoever said it was worse needs his eyes testing)
b) More reliable than the Subaru
(I have multiple sources in the industry telling me the whole reliable Subaru thing is one big poo poo. How many Impreza engines have you heard of blowing up? How many got their short blocks changed? And now tell me how many Evo's you see on the hard shoulder? I know it is all relative, but still...)
c) It is faster than a UK car and many Jap variants.
(Although the speed comparison with jap cars is negligable, it is the type r's with the shorter gears that have the top end advantage. I know, I have experience with both)
d) Handling. I am not going to say anything, bar this: The Evo is the most sureal car I have ever driven in my life. If you want it to grip, it grips till the G's come tearing outta your *** cheeks. If you wanna go sideways, well, anyone who saw me at Silvestone knows. If I was to do the same in the scoob, i would really have to be pushing it.
e) Interior has evolved from the Subaru. Seats are fantastic, trim is very attractive and all the mod cons for a modern day car.
f) Fuel consumption is the same as in my scoob, so I cant see that much more difference to be honest. Although it does feel like the Evo is thirstier, but that is because of its tiny tank.
g) Looks are justifiably divided, I love it, as does the rest of the world by the look of things. I park it in front of my dads coffee shops in Covent Garden and people just stop and stare. At the same time though, I do get some unsavoury types follow me in their cars sometimes
h) Driving feel is so much superior to the Subaru, it communicates so well with you that you can feel the surface of the road thru the wheel, a sensation which i found very numb on the scooby.
When you combine these elements with the brakes, suspension, engine and pure road presence, you cant ignore the fact the the evo is one class machine. I have a standard GSR at the moment and nothing on the track this sunday was able to keep from me for long.
The scooby is an awesome car, the sound alone is simply awesome. Its just that the evo is simply, the next evolution for the jap high tech car.

To all those Evo 6's about, tell me that when its wet or slippery your cars gently transmit to you the message that you are slowly beginning a slide, and next a gentle correction progressively brings it all back- so safe that other road users or scenery are not visited. Is this the case? Or is it all so much more surprising, unpredicable and faster than that, demanding the quickest of reactions at such high speeds that its all just a bit too much? Isn't it enough to go down the road 95% as fast, assured that the Impreza's more predicable to sense and easier to recover slides, will be more likely to get you home alive.
Someone should settle this Evo (impreza)vs Autocar (Evo6) debate once and for all?

Well, I certainly seem to have fired a few opinions!.
With regard to the Warranty situation, the EVO has 3 years UNLIMITED miles.
My car is in Ralliart at this moment having the Stage 1 Performance pack fitted.
This comprises of Lowering 28mm with Eibach springs, High tensile big end bolts, de-catted S/S Super Drager exhaust, Boost pressure increased from 0.9 to 1.3 Bar, HKS Induction Kit and Dash mounted boost guage.
Very interestingly, the service Manager would not divulge the method of increasing the boost and made a point of saying it was NOT the ECU.
Anybody fancy coming for a play in their STI6 or 22B??

As an Evo and ex Impreza owner, who posted near the top of this thread, I have to agree with Jeremy's comments.
Although the Evo's handling (AYC assisted)is far superior, I don't really trust the car as much as I did the Impreza.
I had one tail out experience on the BMW roundabout in Bracknell which shook me a bit. Although it was wet, I wasn't really pushing the car. Those of you who know me know that I tend to ***** foot around.
In the Evo's favour, with a slight adjustment and correction it recovered the situation very quickly, probably a lot quicker and more efficiently than the Impreza might have done.
Someone has since mentioned that there has been a diesel spill on that roundabout which probably caused the problem (along with the rain), but I felt the Impreza would have let me know that I was going to be in trouble long before the Evo did.
I am probably being a bit of a drama queen about it though and this sort of experience is probably a routine thing for some of the braver Evo drivers out there and they tend to think it is all part of owning/driving an Evo.

A few points....
I have a friend who recently bought an EVO VI from Ralliart. The car was two weeks old, he took it to Cadwell, and on the warm-up lap his big end went. Ralliart gave him a new car.
He took this to the recent REVS top speed shoot-out, and his tappets went.
He then took it to Abingdon, and warped his discs every session. Perhaps the brakes aren't so hot after all?
I believe there have also been several recalls regarding them, so reliability isn't a strong point proportionally.
You cannot compare them to UK Scoobs, they've got 35% more power for Poo's sake!
Yes, he leaves me every time we come to a straight, but as he can't drive to save his life he gets obliterated every time there's a bend!
My point is I love the EVO, it looks ferocious, it's very fast, but to me it has no character.
When I drove my mate's car I felt no emotion.
I love driving my Scoob.
EVO VI?
Pah, humbug, mumbug, jumbug!

Ian you are probably right. I think a scooby is fine on the road up to or just under its limit handling, possibly better. However on the limit the EVO is just amazingly good fun. Fun is all I want out of car. Period
Stef.........brakes are great, but break. On second set of discs (not Ralliart). Haven't warped yet. Find out for sure at Brands.

Steve.
Sorry, but if the brakes break, how are they great?
Agreed, they're better than the standard jobbies on a Scoob, but why do you think Ralliart fit AP's to the RS450 and the WRC car?

Stef,
Noone is saying the standard brakes on an Evo are the best in the world, but they are a damn sight better than any other standard brake on an impreza.
EVO Rules
p.s. If I took a 2 week old car to a race track, I wouldnt expect any less either.
