Your car will have 2 cats on it being an import 1 in the up pipe from the headers to the turbo on 1 in the down pipe from the turbo removing them will make the exhaust free flowing helping the turbo spool faster and expel the gas out the exhaust quicker which will give better throttle response and help the engine make more power.
Replacing the std air filter with something like a STi/k&n/green cotton filter helps get air into the turbo quicker.
EcuTek remap is a process of reprogramming the ecu to make the most of the above mods the mapper will also be able to map the car for 97/98RON UK fuel adjust the fuel/boost and ignition map to safely optimise the cars performance.
Hope this helps a little.

I have an MY02 WRX and I've had all the above mods done (and then some lol).
IMHO the very best option you can go for first is some proper brakes. Try and get hold of some Brembo 4-pot off an STI second-hand. Alternatively if you are a bit more flush, get some 6-pots onboard instead.
It's the easiest way to go faster!
Then sort out the handling (stiffer rear sway bar, solid droplinks, 4-wheel laser alignment, front brace etc)
Finally, go for the performance mods mentioned above.
Seriously though, the brakes are a good first step. You'll be able to brake later and harder for corners, and they give you more confidence in the drive - ergo more speed.
just IMO of course

The OEM brakes and suspension on the 02 bugeye can cope with some more BHP
I'd de-cat the car, pop in a decent panel filter and join the Andy Forrest group buy for an EcuTeK re-map !!

None of them - stick to the air box with a panel filter.
I was told that, ignored it and bought a Blitz Sonic Power Air Filter - sounded awesome but promptly killed my MAF. £300 bill, and lucky nothing worse....
You can buy it off me if you want to take the risk

already had the back box done /baileys dump valve but not really made any improvement on the perfomance.... I have heard alot of bad new about the k&n filters but that was the induction kits not a panel filter .. I was thinking of changing to a evo (i no guys ) but dont you just love the sound of the subaru s, so mods are the way forword for me

I started off with a very oily ITG panel filter and moved to a less oily K&N panel filter which didn't seem to leave any gubbins around and had my TD05 with this filter mapped to 325 BHP
Personally I'd go for a dry STi filter I hear that Scott Lowe has some in stock at the moment !!

I changed the induction kit to the STi panel filter with standard airbox as everyone seems to recommend it. Not cheap, and doesn't last forever - although pretty long. IIRC needs inspecting at 20K and can probably be cleaned at least once.
Can't remember seeing any bad press on the K&N panel filter. And these last forever, just need cleaning.
You definitely need to change the standard one.

Me like this thread....am in similar position with 2001 wrx ppp and dont know what to do to get the best bhp/torque gain...had a 2.2 astra coupe before my scooby and spent a sh*t load on induction kits/exhaust/superchip and to be honest the £££ spent weren't worth it, thus the reason of getin wrx. Got to consider the old insurance angle as well...its a nightmare to get insured with a manufacturers upgrade never mind the rest. Dont get me wrong I'm up for upgrading but only for some assured gain in performance that justifies the cost of both upgrade and extra insurance.

AFAIK Apexi Power FC replacement ECU's are best for the classic shape ....
the new age ECU has been sorted by the ECuTeK boys and can be remapped pretty effectively
To make the most benefit from a remap most people would recommend a decat for the newage if keeping the original turbo (TD04 ) then the cat in the up pipe can be kept but there are SN horror stories of newage owners going for bigger turbos and melting the up pipe cat !
