the Racing line sells the 2.5litre short motors for scoobys, on there web site www.theracingline.co.uk, i saw a few of them stacked up in the corner when i picked my car up.

you have blown a head gasket and suddenly its a 2.5ltr engine £1500 is for the block then there is fitting costs and other adons as well think wisely as im sure a new head gasket aint much ????

i think whike the engine is out the is not much more work to do atall so u might as well take the chance to fit a 2.5
i know graham goode do them for 1750
and make sure u get a metal head gasket its only £5 more from graham goode.
and as long as its fitted correctly it wont go on ya.
also have u any rac cover that would come have a look at the car for you... it so worth it for how little it costs.

GGR do the block for that, then ther is fitting costs 2.5 isnt the best choice anyway

What would be wrong with a 2.5, I know it would need a remap etc, but im hearing mixed opinions on the 2.5, it is something i would really like next year.

If the engine didn't overheat (how much water did it lose, circumstances, symptoms etc?), oil pressure is good, oil isn't contaminated with water and vice versa, and the pistons look OK when the engine is removed, then why not just fit new gaskets after checking the block and heads for flatness? Probably about £120 for the gaskets and a day of labour. Whilst you are there you could consider a new clutch if yours is old £150 for a Borg & Beck IIRC, it is easy to do the spark plugs £35, you would be doing the oil and filter £40, fresh coolant £10, Gates timing belt £70, could do with new exhaust manifold/bottom and top of uppipe gaskets, top of downpipe gaskets £30.
Downsides to the 2.5 are:
- brittle pistons, at least on the earlier 03 engines, they do seem stronger on later ones
- they can also do headgaskets
- they run quite hot
Solutions for me to the above problems are being very careful with fuelling and timing (far more careful than you need to be on a UK engine IMHO), using adequate sized turbo rather than screwing a small one creating high back pressures and temperatures, and improving the cooling system (rad, stat, water wetter, weaker coolant mixture), lots of monitoring. This is all to chase 500 BHP. If you stay below 400 BHP it can be a lot easier.
Of course, all the mods required to make power are the same as a 2.0. 2.5 just gives you torque, spool up, and the ability to shred clutches, gearboxes, tyres etc.
