Default Just how far away can your car be heard from..??

I only ask cos i came in this evening only to be told by my mum that she could hear me for about 7 mins before i arrived home, however, i had been 'out' and back, and had travleded 4 miles away from home and back, and by the timing it would appear that she could hear my car from a good 3 miles away..... and she was inside the house with the tele on, but muted.....

I'm amazed and slightly concerned at the smae time really,..... don't want the plod looking for me cos they can hear me from the nick eh...??

You can be sure your nieghbours don't share your enthusiasm.

You can take another gear higher in residential places you know. When I sleep with the window open I dont want to hear your chav chariots exhaust thanks!

I've got a full H&S decat too and in recent months I'm sure it's got louder.

I live on a hill and if I'm coming home late I will often drive up the adjacent hill and coast down mine to keep the neighbours happy.

Even using this tactic my dog will always be staring out of the window looking as if she heard me hours ago and has got a little bored waiting for me to finally arrive.

She does have ears like a fruitbat's wings though.

Used to have a full decat P1 with a blitz bb, that is fecking loud. Only realised when I sold it to my brother and it can be heard miles away. I was going to upgrade the exhaust on my new car but decided againt it. Have some nice early/late finishes and Im sure it pisses the neighbours off no end. He hasnt mastered how to make less noise on our street despite me telling him how to do it. He idles the car for at least a minute at 5am after coming back from work, totally unnecessary IMHO. Our road is on an incline and its the easiest thing in the world to travel the last mile or so off boost or just glide down in neutral from the top of the road.

I had no idea how loud my car was untill i got a mate to belt past me in it

Full H&S system

The other day i saw a slow moving funeral prossession coming up on the other side of the road, i sped up a little and then turned the engine off to coast past them.

Not sure if anyone noticed but i thought it was a good idea

This time of the year, with the windows open I can hear the bl**dy things going away from the traffic lights on the A12 about half a mile away, usually quite late at night. It's so noticable that I find myself, as an STi owner myself, embarassingly, apologising to the wife! I think we all realise that it's a case of noise for noise sake as no-one really believes "the noisier it is the faster it is" or do they? In reality, no road legal Scoob need be any noisier than one with a Prodrive system, but hey - how else are you going to impress the 14 yr olds! Unfortunately the majority of grown-ups think you're a prairy hat!
Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of the Scoob - it's addictive, but there are a lot which have simply become too loud.

Ron,

You think your exhaust is loud, at Ten Of The Best yesterday the Roger Clark Motorsport scoob nearly shook my fillings out from 100yds away and my wife still heard it in our village two miles away!!!! They say there is a time and place for a good sounding car - and TOTB is definitely the place.

We've got a chavchariot driver on our housing estate, and this thing is stupidly loud.
To his credit, the bloke driving it doesnt rag it around the estate, but it seems to be very loud regardless.
Pain in the butt.

Sounds like a common occurance - do you live next to a crematorium or something?

the exhaust note is why i bought my car to be honest. one of the best sounding 2.0 litre cars ever. sounds like a few of you should go and buy an evo.

my magnex exhaust is not too bad..pretty tame at tickover and low revs but comes on song after 3k rpm. after that its louder than ian paisley down a megaphone

On the estate I live on, our road is the only one without traffic calming

So, it has tons of traffic at peak times of the day.......a neighbour has a Saxo VTS, who seems unable to go anywhere at less than 1200000000rpm

Also a couple of scoobies come down our road (with loud exhausts!) who obviously think its great to see if they can hit the top end of 3rd gear going down the road...........

Its not big or clever to be so stupid in a 30mph road and a housing estate !

I've got a H&S full decat and I have to park under where I work - I reverse into the space so the vibrations go through the building and they can feel me on the sixth floor

I'm thinking of buying a bung to tone it down abit - my dad gives me earache when I take him anywhere in it saying he can't hear what he's thinking

I find mine is'nt that loud when driving "nicely" or normally only when applying some throttle, it's those people that have to drive everywhere like an eighteen year old in their first car. The number of chavs in their really old Fiesta's, or Saxos and even Clios that have maybe only part of the exhaust on that I find are not just noisy but downright offensive that I find myself annoyed at.

Or am I just getting old

Then your turbo blew up because you didnt idle or to allow oil to cool it down ?
