Default the awfull WRX rear spoiler

ive never liked the my03 wrx rear spoiler and thought that it was simply the ugliest rear spoiler to ever be fitted to a factory car. a few thing happened to convince me to remove it
1. after a chat with an engineer from ricardo who pointed out the spoiler probably does sweet fanny adams as the shape of the car doesnt lend itself to making lift at the rear.
2. looking for other cars with a similar curved boot that are faster than the wrx to see if they have spoilers and take a look at the audi S6 and S8 with no spoiler but capable of 160+
3. subaru really 'changed' the styling on the bugeye and although they fixed the front end they left the back end in need of attention.
4. all the other spoilers ever seen on a scooby looked ace!

so 5 minutes later with a 10mm socket the darn thing was OFF!
drove to bristol (from london) last night at scooby speeds and the car was quieter with no detrement to handling. its taken for granted the a spoiler in the airflow will give some downforce and lots of drag, so i benefitted from less drag (no i can go faster at better mpg) but im not a wrc driver looking for cornering downforce at 120mph and the car doesn't look so ****! (we took a straw poll outside anwars corner shop in bristol at about 11:30pm last night, the boys at the shop agreed that taking it off to go faster was allowed.

i bet now people will look at the car and think, what **** took a GX and fitted a wrx bonnet scoop, wheels and ppp exhaust

CW42 from the S.M.A.C.S (see the Northern forum) has taken his rear spoiler off his classic and it looks really good.
If you have got the ppp exhaust I dont think too many people will think its a GX.

Agree with you 100% about the design aspects. What have you used to fill the holes left by the bolts? Got any pic of the car?

Did the same - but replaced it with an STi one - looks much meaner now!
Cheers!

I did this to mine too, but the 5 grommets filling the holes doesn't look good.

And I soon came to my senses

Looks totally **** without a spoiler. I had an sti5 spoiler nicked and felt terrible without it on the back, went straight home and fitted the low level pancake original, cant be left bare!

My GX (late '02 silver in the pic) came with a factory fitted spoiler (no scoop of course!)

Looks better then the WRX one, and looks differant to the STi one, I really like the STi spoiler but my car is a WRX and ive already put STi front end on and wanted to stay away from putting everything on from a STi.

Without spoiler looks like an ideal motor to do a bit of late night 'private hire' in....

I would love to see an STI spoiler on a fiesta.

Spose its only a matter of time before you see one on a Nova though

Looks awful without the spolier. Makes the backend look too short.

I quite liked mine without the spoiler from a few angles, but not overall. Only spoilerless whilst I was swapping the stock one and the new carbon one (same as scoobyboy1).

I never realised the bug/blob GX never came with spoilers. I don't believe I've ever seen one on the road that wasn't a wagon.

I love the fact that some people think these spoilers actually create downforce! If that was the case, why on earth has the scooby kept the same (old) design shape for years yet had about 6-7 widely different designs of spoliers over that time? Damn, the car must be poorly designed if every one of those spoliers added downforce.

As some have pointed out, there's a bit of drag, but other than looks, naff all else. It seems Subaru realised (as with many of their designs) they just aren't good designers and a spoliler is needed to imporve the looks of the car. IMO a Scooby without the spolier looks flipping aweful - which says a lot that a car needs a spolier to look good, when the majority of cars out there look OK without one.....

Quite agree with the above. Imagine how naff an M3 would look with huge spoiler. Sti spoiler useful for picnics in the country though. Put a tablecloth on it first of course!
