Hadi,

Tried Autoglym's Intensive Tar Remover? Top stuff, just don't be shy, and be
sure to re-polish afterwards...

Question

Just coming up to my first annual service and have been quoted £180 for the service all in and 70+VAT for the bodywork. Is the bodywork service worth having? the bloke at the dealership said that it can be if you are likely to keep the car for some years but probably not if you change the car regularly. Any comments?

I think it must come down to resale value. If you invalidate the bodywork waranty will the car be worth as much?
£70 + Vat to mind mind isn't a lot to pay. I've just had it done.

Jason ..

Had mine done on Saturday along with my 15k service, breakdown as follows ...

Underbody service £49
Underbody Wax £6.66
Cavity Wax £6.66
Rustproof stamp x2 £6.00 ( for the handbook )
all plus the dreaded VAT

Total invoice inc VAT and a puncture repair was £296 oh and not forgetting taking the wife shopping while it was been sorted ...

If you do decide to have it done, make sure you check closely all the side panels on the car (wings, dooors etc) for underseal overspray while you're at the dealer.

When I had mine done, there was a very fine "mist" of a tar-like substance on the rear wings which I still haven't managed to get off. I noticed this too late to get it sorted by the dealer.

Get it done, £70 +vat for your body warranty is well worth it, I would check the service book for it if I was buying 2nd hand.

Just out of interest who is doing the service?

Lucas of Mansfield will be doing the service. They have always been very helpful.

Just had my 15000 mile service after 11 months and mentioned the body service to dealer that would be needed next month. Dealer said that they checked the car over and all was fine so kindly stamped my book up instead of charging me unnessecary money.I mean whats it all about if I did mega off road rally driving then having the cars underbody done would be fine but as I and I expect 99.9% of scooby drivers drive on tarmac what a con. I have never had any other road going car undersealed every year or is Subaru's underseal poor. Get it checked if it needs doing fine have it done if its okay haggle a stamp in the book. Dont ask me the dealers name in case this gets them into trouble as they are an excellent outfit.

It seems strange to me that you regard them as an "excelent outfit" when they are so blatently prepared to disregard the service in this way. Are you sure they are changing your oil and spark plugs and not just checking that they look OK.

In the service manual it says re-treat the car not just look at it. How did they check the internal body sections?

I hope they are just checking my spark plugs as they should not need changing at the 15000 mile interval or indeed for a couple of more services.
I see though where youre coming from with the body service, but as I said I do not think a new car in one year of motorway, A and B road driving requires such work on the underbody compared with every other car on the road.
