sounds like you have been unlucky mate, either the car had been ragged by previous owners or you drive it like you stole it, or you are just damn unlucky.
as for help, get a second job or sell a kidney / lung on ebay.

Its not normal and sounds as if you been very unlucky.
MY99/00 UK: Mine has done 65k miles (with me for 55k of those miles). Irregularly serviced. Driven very hard and has only had the following go wrong:
Gearbox nut came loose after 25k miles
Gearbox broke after LOTS of abuse @ 350bhp(ish).
I've found it very reliable.

My current STi has been loved its entire life with every single recepit of everything. Motul fully synth every 5k. Diff & gearbox oil changed every 10k.
Really, as long as you look after them.. even if you don't they shoudl be AOK @ 67k... then again it can jsut be bad luck sometimes.
It's easy to justify power *mods and not so with stock service items... only mod a car with a solid base.. no point in expecting more when the basics have not been done.

What was the cause of the engine failure?
Did your water injection ever run out of water?

My MY99 (UK) has FSH with just over 90K on it. Light mods (zorst, and "new car" magic tree).
So far, I've had #3 piston die (but replaced under Subaru warrantee, as it happend prior to my picking the car up!!), the cause was a failing MAF (again, replaced), a 2nd failing MAF (replaced) due to a clumsy service. and a Lambda sensor (again, replaced).
Fingers crossed etc, that's all - minor things really. FWIW, sounds like you've been really unlucky.....

I have had in the last week the same problem with Piston failure, or so I am told. I am afraid I don't have the knowledge or the time to strip an engine down. I got the best quote from Dave at API for a rebuild, but in the end I part exchanged the car.
I have lost so much money on the car that I didn't feel like getting it fixed. I still wanted a scooby so I bit the bullet and brought the STI I always wanted. Finger crossed that this one is not going to let me down...I am sure it won't, it was just really bad luck.

MY00 2nd owner had since 30k now on 50k........serviced yearly by the clinic and last service was alittle late from memory went 10k without service.
Only problem had was duff battery......that and wear/tear parts like brakes etc etc but other than that never let my family down yet (touching wooden cmputer desk)
Saying that mine only gets drivin hard once in a blue moon

how hard do u drive the car...... do u let the oil warm up (as in first 10 mins or more of boost).... this is so much more important that u may think.
a few people on ere may tell u that u dont need fully syn oil, but it will help,,,, not at low temps but at high temps (eg a top speed run) as a cheeper oil will be broke down and be as usefull as water in ya sump.
any hows i dont mean to have a banta at you ...... im just trying to help save you from having any more problems in the future.
good luck

Its a funny thing I was warned B4 about the cost of running a scooby.
I too have had engine rebuild, due to no3 bearing. Gearbox and Rear diff bearing replaced. Proflex suspension cos the standard had gone. New wheels and tyres as a standard gold wheel was bent (not me), exhaust for the SVA test shipping to UK and now a respray, cat1 alarm, etc.
Still when it works it the Dawgs B~~ll~cks and makes me smile 0- 60mph in under 4.5s.

infact it is a very good modle to have as it is set to uk fuel
wer as us import boys often have our ecu`s remaped or use octane booster to be on the safe side.
just the big difference with a classic uk is that it wont handle 300+bhp as well as a sti etc
but sayin that a sti could be tuned at the same time and go pop first!!!!!
lol
on the other hand both the cars could do 100,000miles if taken care of
so dont stress ya self out mate,
just enjoy the car

so UK cars aint really up to the task of being modified?? :-(
The garage i got mine from said that the only diffrence UK cars had to imports were a diffrent gear box (cant remember if it had a higher ratio gearbox or a lower one ) and a heavier body shell as opposed to the jap ones(i got the 2000 turbo)

That's not to say the UK can't be moded only you have to be more conservative. I wouldn't go over 270/280 bhp.

my mate had a 1998 uk impreza with boost controller
exhaust
decat
and air filter
and trust me it was fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wen my car was about 300bhp i found it very hard to pull away from him but we dont know what it was pushing cos it was never put on the rollers.
just use a good tuning company e.g. www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk
(he uses det cans to make sure the engine dont det etc which is a very good thing)
go on make it faster,,,,, **** those boys of in the porsches lol
trust me its well good fun

Subaru claim that 80% of the engine on the STI is different to that of the UK Turbos IIRC. It's basically stronger to cope with the extra grunt.

if your going for 350+bhp then u are going to put a fair bit of cash in to it i guess?
so its best its done right the first time with a company who has alot of experience with scoobys.
if you tell us where your from then im sure myself or someone on here will point you in the best possible direction!!!!
also ill let u in on a little secret that i know u will like
ive just managed to get myself some eagle conrods and wiseco forged pistons for just £500
usually your lookin at 200 per rod
and near 200 per piston
thats just under £1600
ill give u some more info in a mo wen im back in a hour or 2 if u want bud

Acid: I wouldnt worry about it....
<<<<Mine is a std UK engine.
People have had 400bhp with no probs whilst others have had std engines let go. There's no definitive answer but there seems to be the odd bad one.
Gearboxes can struggle a bit more than the STi boxes, but i wouldn't expect a STi gearbox to reliably hold any sort of decent torque with hard use.
UK cars have nicer gear ratios IMO.
Yes the engine is stronger on an STi but there are also pitfalls to STi ownership.....insurance costs.....has the correct fuel been used by previous owners etc.

We got a place here in town called cartech who do upgrades etc.. but i would stick it in to wallace performance due to there experiance
