If you are looking for handling then you may find the current STi a disappointment after your classic cars. In terms of fun and predictable handling my STi comes nowhere near to my MY99, though it is a better built car with some things that i prefer over the 99 car, but it doesn't inspire confidence like the classic cars did. I believe the UK STi to have a fundamental design flaw somewhere in the chassis or electronics that results in it behaving in a most strange manner.
If you are looking for a more solid, and dare i say it sensible, car then go for the STi but if you are looking to have fun it would have to be the classic shape car and a 22b would be nice.

as for the afore mentioned test drive
has anyone on here had any dealings with haddocks (colchester) as it's only 5 miles up the road.
all my previous cars were bought from osbournes which we all know nolonger exists

Now i have had my car for over 2 years so i'm not saying that you can't live with the car, or that i don't like it, but it is no such fun as the classic cars and lacks the confidence inspiring handling. On a small bumpy road (i.e. any fun real road) the classic cars were fun, the STi is a death trap. I have never had my STi on a track and so can't comment from experience but i would imagine that it would be a lot better on a smooth road where you don't need absolute confidence it its performance because there is room to recover from problems.
My cars spend their life on small bumpy roads and i enjoyed my classic and the great handling it offered. Some time back i asked if there was anyone who made a point of putting their STi sideways around roundabouts, something that is a common source of amusement to classic owners, and no one responded saying that they do. I'm not saying that no one has fun in their STi but in my experience when your UK STi is sideways you are having an accident while when your classic is sideways you are having fun, at least in the context of public roads.
It will be interesting to see how "history" treats the STi, my money says it will vanish without trace and some will talk of a fundamental flaw while the classic cars will still be viewed as icons. That is probably why the resale of mine has dropped like a stone :-(
