Newbie Just signed up.
Morning guys,
I am a relative newbie on here. Been hanging around for a while, but this is my first post. I am the sales manager for Turbo Technics, and have just bought myself an STI RA. It's not my first venture into Scooby ownership, as i had bought my first RA two weeks ago, which then got stolen on the second night of ownership!!!! However, thanks to Collin at Thames Valley Motorsport, i now have a second RA.
Incidentally, if any of you need any help with turbos, or any general engine enquiries, feel free to ask and i'll help where i can. I have built a number of fast cars (including and 800bhp GTO), but i am still a relative "newbie" to the world of scooby's, other than what i have to deal with every day.
Nice to meet you all.
Dan

Hi Dan
Welcome to ScoobyNet ...........
I have a general question to ask that you may know the answer to .......
Given regular Oil changes, and sympathetic treatment (allowing a Turbo to cool down and not to spool up when too the oil is too cold) .........
What is the generally held belief of the life of a Turbo in miles??
Pete

On plain bearing turbos, i would expect between 80-100,000 miles on a standard turbo running standard boost. Unfortunately, each car has it's own faults, so certain models can fail much earlier, whereas some seem to be particularly strong. Mitsubishi turbo's are quite hardy, whereas IHI's tend to be a little more fickle. There are, however, so many factors that affect the overall performance and life of a turbo, and as you quite rightly put, regular oil changes with good quality oil, and proper warm up and warm down periods are critical.
I have quite a few basic guidleines that i can post up, if required, that may be of use to anyone looking to get the best out of their turbos.

Both the Td04's and Td05's are hardy little turbos, that seem to wear very well. The IHI range are a little more prone to failure, due to their design and overall dependance on oil quality, but on the impreza range don't seem to do too badly.
I will make a seperate post in the Technical section that outlines some basic guidelines on turbo care.

it wouldn't matter if you could fit a container ship's turbo to a Scooby, the max'd brigade would still claim their corsa was faster!!
