Question Service Dilemma... Opinions & advice please..!

Hi All,

Ok, I'm in a bit of a dilemma....

Scoob is a UK supplied MY03 WRX and is out of Subaru warranty in March '06. I doubt I'll extend the warranty as I've read on here that they want around £1k to extend it and I ain't minted.

It's almost due for it's 30k service. I know it's a biggy. I've been quoted "around £500" from my dealer (Canterbury) and have been quoted £550 by a nearby well known scoob specialist who uses fully synthetic oil and higher grade plugs.

I have been told that as long as the car is serviced as per Subaru's service schedule, my warranty is unaffected.

Do I get it done at the dealers?
Do I get it done at the specialist?
Or do I try another specialist that someone on here may recommend that is cheaper (I'm prepared to travel within reason)?

Now, I'd like to keep my warranty until March, as it'll be just my luck that I'll get my service done elsewhere and something ££££ goes bang. So what do you lot reckon?

Oh...and I may need new pads by the time it's due and the dealer wants £188 to supply and fit. Any ideas..? I've done pads on other cars so would be happy to do it myself, though I dont feel a need for more aggressive pads as I don't want to have to replace my discs in a hurry. Is there a Haynes or similar for Scoobs? What other brands and types are as good as OE stuff, but are not likely to eat my discs?

Cheers,
Nige,
Dover

EU law states that the manufacturer cannot insist you get all servicing by there dealers. Get yourself down to a recognised scooby specialist and explain the situation and warranty details. They should communicate with subaru ref any claims and it won't invalidate ure warranty.

Watch out though..subaru will not pay a penny for 'consumables' like fluids/pads/discs etc....some dealers will put them on no probs and not charge but if you go elsewhere subaru will play it by the book.

Anyone got any pointers for a specialist not too far from Kent that might charge me less than £500 for a 30k service..?

Deffo go to a specialist, and try and provide as much of the materials yourself. Get you own plugs, oil, filter, brake fluid, 'box & diff oil and try to only pay for the labour. Swap out the OE paper filter for a lifetime cotton gauze type such as Green/K&N/JR Racing (not ITG ) then you won't have to buy another ever. If you pay with real money you might also be able to come to an arrangement

As for the pads, a set of Ferodo DS2000's should be about £90 and they're a doddle to fit. Clip off, pins out, push pistons back, remove pads, fit new, reverse initial bit. If a specialist is already doing your brake fluid then they shouldn't add any more to pop in your pads whilst they're at it.

any good will gestures though will probably go out the window, subaru are good if your just out of warranty and say the gearbox goes or some other major part but they do ask for copys of the service book then and with a non franchised stamp (if they stamp it) in there they will probably say no.

Try Xtreme Scoobies in Boreham (near Chelmsford), did the 30k on my 53 plate WRX for £430 all in last month. I gave up on the dealers after the first £180 oil change, I'll take the risk on the warranty, the dealers have just got too greedy

Ok, getting near my decision and I'm thinking the dealer.
Why, well, extreme scoobies are probly about £50-60 in petrol away which brings them up to the same as the dealer price.
And dealer v local specialist is pretty much influenced by Scoobyboys posting.

I will however be fitting my own new front pads and will either be going for Ferodo DS2000's or OE pads. Can I fit DS2000's to the front and leave the back ones as oe as they are fine or will I get nasty problems..?

Cheers for the replies...
