right guys ive been looking about on this forum looking at different things, i was looking at the dyno readings that have been put up. i have a standard impreza wrx on a 93 plate, put it on the dynameter n got bk 246.2bhp at 6000rpm and 227ft.lb. of torque. do this sound pretty standard for an impreza? oh and its an import.

ok guys, talking about the bhp, i just had my turbo changed last week, after changing it, there was a drop in power, old turbo about 16psi, this turbo about 12 psi. just went and had a look at the turbo that came off the car and its a td05, other turbo put in was a td04, si im guessing its the td05 must be a bigger turbo, or wot is the difference btween a td04 n td05?
cheers guys

The one advantage of the TD04 is the very quick spool up time.
People normally change the TD04 for a TD05, not the other way round !!

i didnt know it was a td05 until after i had changed it, only reason i changed it cos the guy at the local performance garage said there was something wrong with it, im gonna get the td05 reconditioned, or probably get a hybrid turbo for it

I was just explaining that a TD05 would replace a TDO4.
Good idea though to re-con the TD05 , you could then sell it along
with the TD04 to fund a real decent upgrade.

Did you buy the new turbo new and if so, what did it cost (if you don't mind me asking)?

Id say that 240+ bhp is high for a standard 1993 WRX. As manufactured, this car made 237 bhp when running on higher octane fuel than we have in the UK (99RON btw, 100+RON fuel wasnt available in Japan then...). Bear in mind that 'at the flywheel' figures are subjective, as the power can only be measured at the driven wheels: corrected 'flywheel' figures are really only an educated guess.

hi mate, i think its cos it was a td05 turbo in it as i found out about 2 hours ago, n not the standard td04

Whether your car is uk or import if it is 1994 model then it should have a td05 - this is the standard from the factory. With your old turbo i suspect someone has tweeked the boost up a bit (should run about 11.5 standard if its a jap wrx). via a mbc or perhaps a new ecu/chip. This would explain the slighty higher power figure you got.
94 wrx should run about 230 - 240 on uk fuel standard
94 uk car can run 208 - 225 on uk fuel standard
Now - if you have just fitted a td04, 90 degree entry turbo then you have taken a step backwards from standard! That turbo will run like a bag of **** with the ecu map you have in the car. This will expalin the now poor performance and low top end grunt.
I suggest you take it easy for now and get a td05 back in there asap.

hi andy, with the td05 in it was running about 15psi boost, now down to about 12psi with td04. there no mbc in the car, not sure if its been remapped.
its a 1993 jap import. where the best place to get it reconditioned, if u know, im in scotland btw
cheers for the advice

If the td05 was holding 15 psi then it had defo been "chipped". That is not stock boost.
The td04 will not hold as much boost becase it is smaller. Not as good IMO.
Really not sure where you can get the td05 recon. I brought a second hand td05 for £175 in great condition.
TBH £100+ fitting for a td04 90 degree is expensive. Those turbos were fitted to the jap import 1992 -1996 wagons - they had a different ecu map to suit -hense you need to get that td05 back in quick!
You do have a saloon dont you?????!!!!!

yeah, its a saloon. now uv got me worried about this now. how do i know if the td05 is fcuked, doesnt seem to b any play in turbine wheels, but the guy at the garage said it was losing boost when hot, something to do with the wastegate valve or something

i not sure wot he ment by not holding boost either, but when i was driving the car, n pushed it just over 100mph is felt as if the car was holding back, not get the acceleration out of it, the car never done it when i first bought it, i had it crusing at 135mph no problem, then i put it on the rolling road, n that swhen the guy told me about losing the boost pressure n it was the wastegate valve problem, n thats why i changed the turbo, but no it wasnt smoking or anything, just losing performance over 100mph
