THere is probably some science behind this, but I dont know what. ? additives in proprietary petrol? or just a collusion between car makers and Shell?
When it comes to something you have paid a lot of money for, it's a far more prudent to 'believe the hype' why bother doing your own experiment and compromising your car?

I don't put supermarket fuel in my MY01 WRX either, IIRC they import fuel from Europe, etc. at a cheaper price, therefore making it easier for them to offer it at a cheaper rate.
It may meet the BS requirements but I bet your engine would run 'cleaner' over a period of time if run on BP/Shell/etc.

My mum's fella use to work at an Fuel Depot, it's all the same stuff, i used to have the same narrow minded thoughts
But as stated Tesco's don't have their own rigs, it's supplied my one of the big companies.

I can't believe anyone is really that naive as to believe that 'petrol company' fuel is any better than 'supermarket' fuel. As already mentioned over and over again, supermarkets are NOT oil companies. They do not have their own refineries, all they do is buy it off oil companies and resell it under their own brand, just like Weetabix making Tesco's own brand 'wheat biscuits', Heinz making baked beans for supermarket own brands, and your gas and electricity at home being identical to your next door neigbours regardless of whether you bought it from Scottish Power (for example) or got ripped off by British Gas.
And as far as the thing goes of car manufacturers 'recommending' fancy Shell/BP/etc fuel, of course they will if they've a vested interest in doing so. If you're on the inside, there's bound to be a link somewhere. Car manufacturers have always had links with oil and fuel companies.
If the fuel meets the octane standard that your car requires and it also meets the BS standard, then it is guaranteed to be of a certain quality, simple as that.

The brand is immaterial - cheap petrol has always been lower octane stuff that's boosted. Perhaps that's changed now, but that's certainly how it used to be.

If all the different petrol sellers are getting their fuel from the same depot, which they are, and not doing anything to the petrol on the way, then it must be the same stuff..
What we really all want to confirm is that Tesco 99 looks after your engine the same way Optimax does, or does Optimax indeed have extra cleaning stuff which is lacking in the 99 ron stuff.

Is Tesco's not a supermarket then dumb ***? I'd like to know where you got this info from. You made such a bold statement and just wondered how you could back it up.
If you can't back it up, shut up!
Besides, why would they start with so called cacky 90RON european fuel when they could just use 100RON european fuel and then they wouldn't need to add anything.

I second this...
If it's good enough for the pro's then nothing anyone says on here can degrade it for general use on an everyday performance road car such as a Scooby.

AFAIK it all comes from the same refineries, but "branded" fuel will have various detergents/other additives in them, whereas "supermarket" fuels will have a cheaper/smaller additive package.
