Cool Best road in Britain

What is in your opinion, the best road in Britain? Its got to be one single road and not a combination of several.
For me its got to be the A82 from Crainlarich to Inverness . I live fairly near this road (stirling) and i can asure u it takes a helluva beaten. Its got loads og big straights mixed with lots of twisties and going through the mountains in Glen coe is stunning. Anyway, u guys got anything to rival it? Have u been on this road?

Probably not the best in Britain, certainly there's no mountains but the B645 from St. Neots to Higham Ferrars in Cambs/northants is one of my favourites.

choice of two i'm afraid......

1......Cat and Fiddle pass between Buxton and Macclesfield, choose your time
carefuly to avoid traffic police (ealy in morning is best)

2......Do not know what it is called but it runs between Penrith and Alston in
Cumbria, not done this one for many years now but very fond memories
of this one.

Cheers..........Tony..

I remember before they built the A14, and that was the A45 - the main route east-to-west to places like Brum. Wasn't so much fun then!

I agree - superb road. And I live in Stirling too. The outlaws live in Inverness and we often take the A82 when going to visit, rather than the horrendous A9.

BTW what do you drive? I often feel the urge to wave at Scoobies, but don't know what the reaction would be to being waved at by a SKODA!

Yes, but I was a biker then so it still wasn't bad

Even the bit from St. Neots to Cambridge was fun (though probably potentially a bit TOO fast, I've pulled some ridiculous speeds through the sweepers after the straight at Croxton), It's far too busy now (at least during daylight hours) and I've got olderand hopefully wiser.

Not in Britain, but close - the mountain road that connects Ramsey to Douglas in the Isle of Man. Lots of fast corners a few slower corners and a straight that's good for 150 mph+. No need to worry about the cops either. No speed limit signs in the IOM mean drive as fast as the conditions permit. Last time I was over there, I overtook a cop on the mountain road doing 100+.

Those of you that have been will know what I mean.

Any A/B road on a bright, early Sunday morning with no cars for miles in front or behind.

I have a choice of three.

The first is the road between Stamford Bridge and Malton that goes through Buttercrambe. Lovely quick bends mixed with climbs and dips.

The second is the A170 between Whitby and Pickering. Well liked by bikers so watch out!

The third is from Fridaythorpe via Sledmere to Willerby. A great bypass for getting to Scarborough instead of going nowhere on the A64!

As you can tell I'm from God's county Yorkshire (North that is!!!)

The A68 from Darlington to Edinburgh has some fantastic sections and is best done at night (mind the cameras nowadays though!! )

Also the A696 from Newcastle to Otterburn used to be a good driving road (until it to got cameras on it )

Closer to home is the A515 from Sudbury to Buxton

I'm going up to Mull at the weekend and will probably go up the A82 and cross at Corran, then drop down to Lochaline, rather than go to Oban. I have to agree, the road takes some beating. Watching the nutters on big bikes in the summer is an experience worth having as well. What's the speed camera situation like on the road these days?

For the Tour of Mull? There are no fixed cameras at all, but the police are using unmarked bikes.

Head North out of Ullapool and up to Ledmore Junction. Doesn't get much better than that.

I dislike the A82 in places, as it's very frustrating for about 10 miles coming into Fort William and again on the other side. The North side of Loch Ness is also horrendous at times, due to slow moving tourist traffic and virtually no safe passing places. Yoiu end up with big convoys from time to time. The South side of Loch Ness via Dores is much more entertaining

Yeah, going up for the rally. The biggest problem I've got is petrol because none of the garages on Mull have any Super Unleaded never mind Optimax so I've had to get some octane booster. Trouble is the car has a TSL 333 conversion on it and when I spoke to them yesterday, they didn't seem very happy for the car to be run on standard fuel even with octane booster but I've got no choice. I think the last Optimax station is just north of Stirling, is that right?

I don't know if any variety of SUL is available between Stirling and Inverness! Not sure about Fort William. None at Callander, Lix Toll or Tyndrum for sure

Fill up in Stirling and drive slowly

That kind of defeats the point of having a car like this on a road like the A82 though. I may end up going to Oban, they must have SUL in Oban, can anyone confirm that?
