Thumbs up ill put it to u. u decide! lol

hello fellas. i have sold my 172 now and looking at getting another car. im 22 with 6 points (not v good!) haha. Basically i have 8k max to spend. initially i had my heart set on a classic scooby my99/00 but after thinking of running costs insurance etc im starting to think outside the box if u like. The other car im considering is a seat ibiza cupra. it would be a mk3 so around 2001 y plate spending 6.5k max leaving some money for mods. they can be chipped straight to 200 bhp and around 220lb/ft for £500! what would everyone else do im my position? I dont need to drive it to work, it would be weekends/evenings only. occasional motorway journeys. no trackdays or 1/4 miles, but i want a fast car. quicker than my clio was!

all other suggestions welcome!

Subaru will be more reliable, practical, handle better and be faster at legal speeds. Also easier to tune later on.

Seat would be cheaper to insure, just as fast 70mph+, more comfortable (?) and smaller.

Get yourself a scoob my man, you wont regret it. I'm 22 with 6 points also, had mine (MY00 uk turbo) a year and i have no intentions of selling her (unless i can get the extra ££ together for a type r ).
Keep away from the seat and do the right thing, plus you wont get coated on here for having the ibiza

being a newish scooby owner @ 23. i also had 8 grand to spend and started to have momentary madness thinking of buying other cars other than a scooby. I contmplated many other vehicles but i new in the end i HAD to get a scooby so i did & it was the best thing i ever did and im telling you mate you will not regret buying one if you do the only thing is all you tend to think about is scoobys which in my opinion isnt a bad thing (get a scooby its the only way trust me)

Surly a modded Ibiza is gonna cost about the same maybe more to insure than a std Impreza not to sure on service intervals but being a turbo charged car its not going to be much longer intervals than an Impreza?

And if you don't have a remap i would think that a std Ibiza is more of a sideways step from the 172?

Just my tuppence worth

I'm 23, got my sti 4 18months ago.
Just finished polishing her again! Believe the hype, these car's are superb! Yes, the insurance premiums and maintainance can be a bit steep, but if you can't afford them , you can't afford the car!

Ive seen a few of your posts, and ill tell you now, if you buy anything else other then a scooby, you will regret it. If your heart is set on it, give in, its only money, and at the end of the day, your only young once.

At 20 this was my baby, and I had to sell it, cause I had **** heads stealing parts off it.

Ended up getting a Audi TT, and regretted it, 2 months later I sold it and bought my 2nd scooby.

And Ill never sell my Scooby again.

Blimey not you again Clarkie I'd spend the £8k on a bug eye personally, newer more modern and solid car than the classic, mod it if you feel the need for more go, go go.. I've a tweaked '01 WRX and for a few more days also a 172, I enjoy driving them equally.. The Seat, well its just a Seat isn't it, nuff said!

i got the bug for a scooby a couple of years ago and eventully got one and i must admit i was a bit dissapointed ,,i expected supercar handling and performance and didnt get it,,it was good but nothing a hot hatch cant do.

However im glad i owned one but i wouldnt have another,,,,i would say go and get one or youll always be wondering what if.

Folks will scoff but id recomend a zs 180 ,,tiff needel said it was the best front driver he had ever tested and you can get a good late model for 5k,,parts are easily available and there is a wide choice of tuning options now as well ,,mine is still nasp but has 180 bhp/ton which is enough to match a 265 bhp late model sti.
Regardless of what folks think of them they are a fantastic drive and the v6 sounds fantastic especially with a zorst modification.

Thats not exactly a scientifically proven fact, (my polite way of saying, load of bollocks) - depends on who had the car before you and how it has been treated.

Go test drive cars in your price range, then test drive the seat, see what you want after that.

No, fact - the new age is without questsion a more modern, solidly built car out of the factory, nothing to do with who or how it has been looked after.. but absolutly, as you suggest drive them both, depends what you are looking for....

omg brave man to slag off a subaru on scoobynet!!!!! thats like an invitation to your own funeral!

I had a MG ZR 160+ before owning my scoob and there is no comparison. People always laughed at my rover, i had no friends, i had lonely weekends and even my girlfriend refused to talk to me! ha ha

NOW.... Well what can i say, nothing, everyone says it for me....... i drive to the shops and everyone looks at whats making that flat four rumble, all the kids (including adults with a kiddie nature) say nice car, or you can lip read they are saying that!

My neighbours hate me because i wake them up, the local police hate me because im not speeding but making one hell of a rumble, my girlfriend hates me because i love my car more than her, ITS BLOODY GREAT! i wake up smiling everyday!

Ask any subaru turbo owner, and i have no doubts they will all agree with me.........

A SEAT is a tin ****box for college students and housewives. I hope you're not really considering one of these.

It was a 2000my classic shape turbo it had one owner and only covered 15k miles.
Im not slagging em off ,,just saying that after all the hype i expected a lot more,,it wasnt that quick and it understeered quite badly,,,,i modded it somewhat and it improved a bit, but ive driven many hot hatches and most of them were at least an equal handling wise and some better,,the scooby rolled about like the suspension was made of jelly,,it feels fine in isolation but when you try different cars it showed up the shortcomings.
My old rover(zs) as folks call them is in a different league through the bends to my old scooby,,it just inspires you and feels fantastic ,almost reacting like a kart compared to most cars ,,the scooby would go through corners just as fast but where as my zs feels great and makes you really enjoy the corners ,my scooby didnt,,,with the understeer it always felt like it was hanging on by the skin of its teeth and wasnt inspiring at all.

p.s ,,all the attention that some of you seem to like i didnt want at all and it got to the point where i couldnt park it anywhere and feel relaxed because it would attract folks from all over the village ,and with all the stories about folk being robbed or hurt in order to steal their scooby i decided enough was enough ,,my wife often drove it on her own or with my young children and in my book it wasnt worth the risk
