They put supermarket fuel BP Ultimate and Optimax in a 55 plate STI. The optimax gave it an extra 14 or so BHP over the supermarket fuel and more torque. Cant remember the exact figures, something like
Supermarket fuel- 245
Optimax - 259
or very similar figures!!

Regardless of what it was the brand new STI was over 20bhp down on the manufacturers quoted power. Even on optimax it was less that 260ps!!! thought they were supposed to be 280 out of the box.!!

Full results were
BHP
Optimax 249
Ultimate 248
Supermarket 235
Torque ft/lb
Optimax 258
Ultimate 248
Supermarket 232
They reset the ecu between each fuel, how quick would the ecu be able to make most of the fuel coz i thought they had to adjust over a few miles or do they adjust instantly

Remember the registration plate and don't buy it if you see it for sale - it's been severely thrashed by everyone.

Typical of 5th Gear's program researchers to leave out Tesco 99RON. Why bother testing two of the three best fuels? They should have included the TOTAL Excillium stuff as well, it could be a better option than BP Ultimate for all we know.
I'm convinced Tesco 99 is better than Optimax. Anyone else agree?

If the man says 280 then it should be 280 surely even Litchfield advertise as The new STI gets the 276bhp engine with improved low down response and cleaner emissions.
Not saying I know any better than most on here, cause I know I dont, but I was a little lost by the numbers that were quoted.

i was shocked by bp ultimates figures as my wrx runs like absolute ****e on it coughing and misfiring like buggery on a non-remapped 93 wrx compared with optimax with no troubles

I think you'll find the power quoted was at the wheels.
Think of the units being something like 'Elephants'. The number of units is irrelevant, the difference between them is what they were trying to show.
Wish I'd known it was happening, Thor are right next door to us!

I think the programme is repeated either today or tomorrow late at night/early morning.
With the petrol figures, even the Golf GTI was way down, and VAG cars nearly always hit the manufacturers claims. But at least I can now justifiy using Optimax to the wife, who thinks I should be claiming Tesco points instead. Bring on 99ron to all

A no brainer if ever there was one!

My 996 TT seems to run better on Tesco, been running it (& all my other cars) on Optimax for years, but recently my TT it seems a little lumpy on Optimax & not very smooth at low speeds, Tesco 99 seems to cure this.
Nothing more than gut feel but will continue to use Tesco.
