Default Figures reveal 'speeding police'

Essex Police vehicles were caught on speed cameras more than 5,000 times in the first six months of 2005, a BBC Look East investigation has revealed...

Question.
Is it illegal for police cars to speed unless they are under their blues & twos?

They are byenlarge constrained by exactly the same road traffic laws as everyone else....there are a few exceptions and obviously once Blues and Twos are on for a legitimate purpose then laws generally go out the window, provided they don't do anything reckless or dangerous without justification. Believe me the bosses love sticking officers on when they can.

Many police cars now have black box data recorders anyway....

They don't have to have blues & twos on. They do, however, have to be on a call or have justification for speeding. Given the PR nature of police forces these days, they can't just ignore them or sweep them under the carpet.

whats more alarming that despite a foi request, 3 forces did not comply.

2 stating they did not hold the data, (begs the question a) who does, and b) why didnt they get it!!)

and cambridgeshire stating it would take to long,

so now we know, they will persue you until the ends of the earth if you commit a crime, but if they do, well we havent got time.

roll on elected chief constables by the community.

And then the Gov't wonder why the British people have little respect for our boys in blue.
Nothing worse than being berated by a copper for doing 58mph in a 50mph zone, on a dual carrage way with very little traffic on it. Aparently, it would only be a matter of time before I knocked down & killed that child happily playing in the middle of the dual carrage way

Yet follow any cop car on any road and stick exactly to the speed limit, then watch them pull away from you. !!

I've been in a tailback heading towards the Army & Navy roundabout in Chelmsford several times when we had to make way for a Police car with it lights and sirens on. The thing is they were heading TOWARDS the town centre where the Police Headquarters are. This made me wonder if it was a real emergency or they just couldn't be bothered with waiting in line with the rest of us plebs!

True, but you'd have to be nuts in this day and age not to have your blues on when speeding in response to something....law suit waiting to happen. Only time you're likely to speed and have no lights on is catching up to something on the motorway to check it's speed....there are notable exceptions of course

One thing to think about,

You enforce the police to stick to every limit all the time, they will get so frustrated that they will throw the book at joe public if he dares to go 1 MPH above the limit.

And when was the last time you got pulled by a police car for speeding and not by a scamera.
Sorry but smacks too much of one rule for the police and another set fr the genaral public.
Given the rubbish state of public perception of the police and bad driving standards displayed by both the police and the general public Surely the Police should be the ones setting the standards.

IMHO of course
