Default Newbie here

hi
im pretty new to the subaru scene, my brother has had a few subarus but havnt really been in to them until he took me in his new sti ra

anyway im thinkin of buying a subaru, and selling my mk3 golf vr6 which i have at the moment, getting hold of a subaru shudnt be hard as my brother has a small importin business.

ive got a few questions which id like u lot to answer.

firstly hows the mpg on a lightly modified subaru e.g decat exhaust and filter? (not heavy mods) my vr6 averages about 19 mpg mainly because i drive local.

are they reliable if they are maintaned well?

how are the parts priced compare to my vr6

thats all
thx for ur help

Heya there!
Welcome to the club

MPG? Isnt tooooo bad overall, obviously if you are pressing on a bit, it drops to the low tens....
Conversely though on a motorway doing 70-80 i can get about 28MPG.
So i think your average might be a little better than the VR6... depends on your driving style though eh!

Only owned one for about 6 months so im not as well informed as most, but overall they are pretty reliable cars, if you look after them.

Go on get one, you know you want to!
What sort of thing would you get?
New / Old, STi etc??

Chris

chris, has to be a classic shape sti m8

as for the 19 mpg on the vr6 thats a mix style of driving but not too much ragging, if stopped in traffic it can go reaaly low. but if for the same type of mpg i can get a subaru then i dont no what ive been waitin for.

£30 of sainsurys super unleaded gets me 130-150 miles on the vr.

I've got a MY01 WRX and with a partial decat and GREEN panel filter and before my ecutek remap I was getting ~22-30mpg's depending on driving style. Now with my ecutek remap I'm getting ~19-25mpg's depending on how I drive it.

Apart from my major gearbox failure that was due to a manufacturing defect, it's been completely reliable (touch wood), even in this really cold weather.

Can't comment on the cost of parts because I've never owned a VR6 but the 30k service (a big one but excluding the cambelt) was £420. A set of front discs was £100 and a set of front pads the same cost.

3) See answer 1 again!

Great cars, but cost a lot to keep on the road.

my brother has had a few subarus
my brother has a small importin business
With all respect, your Brother should know all about the cars he imports and sells and if he has had a few subarus he could surely answer your basic questions such as parts prices and fuel consumption?

How old are you?

Basically if you dont know what to look for when your buying cars in an import business, you shouldnt be in that business as your either buying total crap or accident repaired cars at low prices, ie something you wouldnt want to drive

Your the same age as me, i turned 23 November, as you probably already know, insurance is a bit of a nightmare on anything that is imported or ends with the letters STi.

If your after a good all round scooby it would be worth looking into a UK spec Turbo 2000, as there a insurance group 17, I think I was paying around £1.5k insurance at 19, and I still managed to get over 300+bhp out of it.

It often costs more to insure a classic (group 17) than a new age WRX (group 19)

Either way, if you're under 25 its gonna hurt!

It was cheaper to insure my newage then my MY00 turbo 2000.

I didnt know that the newage WRX was a group 19, I thought it was a group 17 like the turbo 2000.
