Default Beaten by a Porsche Carrera 4

I was having a bit of a play with a Carrera 4 yesterday in my 2005 Wrx with mods. I was quite surprised by the little difference in speed. From 0 to X20 I was about 1 or 2 car lengths behind with a passenger. It was only after that he started to leave me.

When we stopped at some lights he told me he had just blown his head gasket and it was gonna cost about 5 grand!! Whoops :-(

What power do these kick out?

I was quite impressed I've got to admit, considering I have a lardy newage.

My uncle owns a 996 C4s and we had a little race (on a stretch of private tarmac) He was livid to see my oriental rocket leave his german wizardry behind . through to 80 he was nowhere to be seen then began to recover the couple of car lengths back as we approached 125 he was still behind , but had recovered a significant margin back . His engine is standard apart from the aftermarket sports exhaust sytem that cost £1600!?!?!? my Bug Sti import was approx 275WHP with exhaust and ECU at the time. Top end on these things is where it really lashes out and your scoob will become prey for strechs where speed is in the triple figures

carrera 4 should be about 325bhp...but it weighs 1450kg...which means you did good!

He should have had a clear 30-40bhp per tonne over you...

If the failure was that noticable to him then he will most likely have pulled a head stud on one of the cyclinders - which is the most common form of engine failure on these things. Engine out job since the block needs to be tapped to put in a new stud!...

He must have missed 5th and hit 3rd or forgot to change up in the excitement...

shouldn't you have been driving through a cloud if he'd done his gasket in?

it'll be going 'put put put' !!It's a copper gasket on these things - one on each barrell and each barrell has 4 head studs - they don't blow conventionally -which ever barrel has a broken head stud will 'put put put' and maybe begin leaking a littl oil...if he don't get it sorted then he can kiss goodbye to his entire engine very quickly...

There are a few Carrera 4's as well - 996, 993 for example, with the latter having 265 or 272 bhp depending on the build year - this will make a difference too...

I wondered that same thing and my friend asked him .

He said that he'd just had it done and the exact same symptoms happened as when it happened last time. Loss of power ,oil warning light and a bit of smoke (surprisingly little though)

I foddered a C4S from about 10mph all the way to stupid 120+ speeds.

He gave me a couple of flashes of his lights when I gave a couple of flashes on the hazards. Which was surprising!! The Carrera looked awesome!!

Cheers,
Grant

964 C4 - 250bhp
993 C4 - 272 and 285 for the later vario cam
996 C4 - 300 and later 3.6 versions 316

Never heard of a head gasket going on a 911 either.

nice bit of footage - looks like you had a great time...I take it the 911 was similarly powered at 325bhp ? Would I be right in thinking your standard suspension was maybe a little hard for that ring ? How familiar are you with the ring - have you done better times in other cars ?

The car in question is a 993RS which had been modified to GT2 spec. Not sure what BHP it runs but its substantially lighter than my car and was toying with me. The car is more than capable of sub 8 min laps which I am not.

No the std suspension isnt too hard for the ring, it understeers far too much its fair to say but thats a scooby trate.

I guess you could say I know my way round the ring, did about 150-200 laps in 6 or 7 visits last year.

Scoob is quicker than my 205 track car, but the 205 is much more fun.

Gary

Edited too say I have had quicker passenger laps, mostly in german cars it has to be said.

993rs - yeah got to be no more than 1100kg I'd guess considering how heavy the new gen cars are to the original '73 RS...great drivers cars - anyone changing from a scooby for 'the change of it' should really try one - I know I'll have another one day..still would have been different in the p*ssing rain I imagine!

Nice vid anyway - thanks for posting it..

So did you have a 1973 RS? they are worth a fortune now.

I followed an aquataince for a lap in one once. The guy was not young and pedalled it like a mad man. Fair play to him as the car was worth a small fortune.

no - sorry I didn't have a 73 RS - it does read like that -I just meant a 911 - preferably a classic - I had an 84 Carrera 3.2 - only 1160kg with 240bhp so power to weight very similar...I still have a seriously strong affection for it now.

This was her....( cost me a three grand more I might add when I bought her but never had to spend a penny on her in two years... she's still mint now - whoever has her has a bloody great little car for crap all money...

Agh right, I thought you were saying you had an original RS.

Funnily enough I got offered a very nice 964RS today, a friend of mine deals in them. Gorgeous cars.

yeah , I was seriously torn between another 911 and the wrx300. I figured the change will be fun- all that AWD power will be a new challenge...I am a real car nut...I love em all...

mmh.. 964RS - V. nice cars...you not tempted ? easy to home maintain - I did all my own service and maintenance -and exceedingly pleasurable it is to be in total control of all that..
