Default Driving flat out. (old thred)

Just been reading an old thread about a guy off on hols to drive his car "flat out". Seems a fun holiday but what deems flat out. Bout a yr back the wife decided at 3 am to give birth, so jumped in my recently bought wrx. She basically started having it next to me and basically i drove what i thoght was flat out, got to 130 and it wouldn't give me any more. Thankfully waters (no word of a lie) went midway across ozzy carpark. Is my car slow or was i backing off, not big and not clever i know but what a proper ambulance!

I have never had my car flat-out .......

Simply no reason to .....

I decided yesterday to look at the Revs. I drive at ............. I never went over 2500RPM the whole time (and it was so pleasant!)

Everyone should try it sometime .... no need to drive like a ***** all the time!!

Don't get sooooo defensive

I was NOT talking about YOU ... it was a 'general' comment!!

But, you clearly thought the cap fitted you quite well???

Oh My GOD!!!

I never knew that idling an engine at 850RPM was labouring the engine

Pete

I think you have just 'given birth' to a new urban myth

Point taken, but is it an a exercise in self restraint or do you have a more laid back outlook on life?

Hmmm.. Idling is not labouring because the engine is not driving the gears. Ali's point is valid you need to arm yourself a little more effectively before going into battle.

I thought as an Engineer, you knew what labouring (or lugging - as the Americanism) was; Putting excess load at too low rpm...i.e using 5th@1300rpm up a hill when you should be in 4th or 3rd

Have you had the pleasure to hear the noises an laboured engine makes when a numpty with poor clutch control tries too pull away from standstill in 2nd or 3rd gear. Low speed engine knock is not a pleasent, or healthy noise.

Hey another "possible" urban myth: Could it be all these Subarus with failed engines are caused by people with bad clutch control "nearly" stalling the engine, or pulling away in too high a gear??

"My Missus blew my big ends by going into labour"

....It is plausible. LOL

Back on topic.

If your car will only pull to 130mph, thats probably 122-123 mph true speed.

Thats down on power IMO. what age/year/miles is your car? is it modded or standard?

Dont get offended by Petes wind up's , be different from the crowd

Ahh..! but in Pete's defence, he's a nuclear warhead engineer (senior consultant..) for AWE..!

He's a professhnial..!

However, I was told by a reliable source that he wrapped sweets for Worthers Originals..!

BTW Pete, given the speeds (or lack of) that you drive at you must get through quite a few WO..!!!

Sorry smack on the wrist for taking the bait..!

However, back on topic. When you say your WRX was new how many miles were on the clock..? Anything under 6k miles and it's not giving anywhere near it's best.

Also, given the circumstances, I presume you didn't warm the engine up very sympathetically (sp?)..? Could be that the ECU was holding back boost as temps weren't optimal..?

How well did it pull to your v-max..?

*pleaaaase* tell me why you drive an impreza then. Surely better fuel economy and cheaper parts could be gained from owning a different car. I see you as an octavia estate turbo diesel kind of man.

by the way, thought you was on the board of school governors or you telling more porkies again.
