Ignore Pete. Well, almost ignore him.

First off, welcome to the site and the joys of Scoob ownership!

If you use the search function on Scoobynet then you'll be able to see countless threads on the topic of oil and you should find what you are looking for.

I STILL think an owner should look in the owners manual and do what that says ................

Oh, yes, if you really are new (and not just starting a war) welcome

Agree with Pete, please read your owners manual.

Beacuse what will happen on this thread will confuse you (sorry, but that is what happens)

(more than likely a Classic shaped scoob owner will come along screaming not realising that later scoobs specify thinner oils ).

My advise is, is choose oil to your driving style (and be honest - how many times do you red line or go above 4500rpm). 5w-30 is specified for this model and generally should be ok for day to day use at normal road speeds, especially at this time of year. But for high speed or long motorway journeys, or hard use, then 5w-40 would be a better choice.

Halfords are doing 1/2 price at the moment too!!!

Do NOT get led down the 'name' scam ........ buy the best value you can as long as it meets Subarus requirements you will be totally fine!

As a general rule your scoob is just like any other car so dont worry too much about special treatment. After a hard run let it cool down for a minute just to give the turbo chance to have a breather.

Before everyone else comes along telling you porkies i'll give you my two pennith worth.... you can use normal water and car shampoo to clean it, you can use normal polish, no its not a rally car, You dont need a cocklink (sorry knocklink) and anything else people say is an absolute MUST is probably crap....

You and the local Optimax seller will soon be on first name terms

Be prepared to be skint probably on extra's and dont listen to everyone everyone tells you on here.

That should just about do it to start with ........

Oh and dont listen to Gutmann Pug

You can do a LOT worse than listen to me ................

I've seen it, done it and driven it ......

I've heard it, crapped it and snogged it ......

If you listen to the ***** on here they will get you buying 'Special Oils' at £30+ for 5 Litres ...................

they will have you buying tubs of polish for £30 a tub ................

they will tell you that a CockLink stops your engine blowing up ............

they will tell you that only Tyres costing £500 each are good enough ....

they will tell you that brake pads should only last 500miles (or they are crap and you shouldn't have such a car as this!)

You, of course, need a LambdaLink too - or the engine will blow up .....

A MAF should be renewed every month or you are in dire trouble ........

When changing your Oil you MUST carry out the **** Oil Change Procedure (do a search) .........

Listen to a lot, ignore most, act on a few ...............

Last used Silkolene ProS 5/40 FULLY-SYNTHETIC in my bugeye, which is mighty pricey compared to the 20/50 mineral stuff I used to use when doing the oil change on my old Truimph Acclaim -those were the days. To be honest, I may be swayed by 'common sense' and use a quality semi-synthetic, but another way of looking at it is that it's only once per year so is the £10-£15 difference worth worrying about?

I'm not worried about it at all ..........

Just as long as it's in MY pocket and NOT someone elses (just because they fed me a ****-and-bull line that scared me!)

WHY, WHY, WHY oh WHY pay MORE when you get NO ADVANTAGE whatsoever??

Whether it be 1p or £1million??

And I change my oil TWICE per year!

Because SUBARU tell me too ............ thats why!!

They also say that I can use COMMA Semi Oil and all will be well .. at £15 .. they even say I can use Halfords Fully .. at £15 also

Strangely, when it comes to my car, I do what the makers of it tell me to do - after all, they have spent £Millions upon £Millions researching whats best 'all round' ............ they have knowledge that no-one on here can ever hope to match!

I come damned close ...... but even I am out of Subarus league when it comes to advice on their own products!

You should buy whatever oil you feel like buying, just make sure you use semi synth or fully synth..fully will get you through the year. Get a genuine subaru filter and the sti panel filter...a decent back box to unleash that flat 4 burble and treat her with respect...cam belt change wouldnt do her any harm either.. peace of mind, nice drive listening to that engine note....CHAMPION!!!

Bob

Ps: see what you think, get to learn about her and when you want more power...speak to the techs on here, they will help you spend your money on the right products...cheapest way, expensive way...whatever.

I'm a stuck record that is required to balance the other stuck records, you know the ones:-

"Do the **** Oil Change or you will die an 'orrible death!!"

"Buy a CockLink cos you will look smart and cool down at the MacDonalds Teenie Bopper gathering"

"Any Oil that doesn't cost £30+ per 5 Litres just must be crap and your engine will die a million deaths!

I'm called a Governor, I bring light where there is only darkness, I bring normality to a world of geeks, I deliver common-sense solutions to common problems and I don't get scared away from treating my car like a car!!

So there we have it

good ol' ps lewis is probably right - but I'll stick with my 5W40 fully-synthetic -and once per year oil change which coincides with 10,000 miles - AS STATED IN THE SUBARU OWNERS MANUAL.

Another genuine question about oil.

What a shame scoobynet is turning into a generally unfriendly and childish place, used to be far more grown up than this.

Sorry, Simon ....................... please ... go ahead with your sales patter!!

BUT, expect to be challenged if you say that the Halford or Comma oild shouldn't be used!

If you don't like the challenge then don't post your cut'n'paste stories, ok?

Most salesmen cannot stand the challenge of a good logic argument

I assume you have purchased some and had it analysed?? What were the results?
