Question Type R Owners?

After owning various classic 4 doors (WRX, STi RA, WRX Triple 555 and UK Turbo) I am after a Type R.

Is there anything in peculiar to this model I need to look for?

Thank you.

I'm sure with your previously owned cars you'll know mostly what to look for.

Only thing you got to look for is 2 less doors and DCCD

May be worth being extra vigilant about crash damage as the type r's seem quite tail happy and potentially easier to crash.

Lots of sti's seem to have had rebuilds, if this is the case check that the cause of the faliure has been addressed. I was happy buying my Type R as it had a new engine, I made sure I rang the engine builder though and asked him what the cause of faliure was.

Default STi RA/STi Type R

My STi RA had DCCD so I "presume" Type R will be similar in handling.

Will have approximately £10,000 to spend on a good car (if not a Type R then I will go for an STi RA as had to sell mine last year (much regretted).

Car to be used at Loton Park/Prescott/Shelsley hill climbs + local roads around Shropshire

Thumbs up

Thanks DazW - just started to look on the web and will check specialist magazines.

Force is strong with the V4/V5 models - some very good examples (even if you pay a little bit extra £).

10K will get you a perfectly decent example. Theres a 96 being sold locally to me with genuine 22b front bumper and rear spoiler for £8k and no one will buy it.

I'm waiting a couple of months until the lads moves into his new house and then offer 7K

You've had DCCD before so you won't do what I did first time I drove a Type R and set the diff to lock and wondered why it was bouncing about whilst making a 3 point turn

DCCD was a great bit of fun!

I did not fully appreciate/understand how to use it for ages, but once I sorted it out - fantastic.

After previous Imprezas (all great cars) the STi RA was a revealation.

I commute on B roads (25 miles each way) and after a 9 hour day in the office the Impreza is the perfect solution to get me home

I have not had a car for 12 months (sharing wife's Rav 4) and some money is coming my way - I have given careful consideration to what I need and the
Impreza fits the bill (completely).

As I will have owned 5 Imprezas do I have a problem

Lol thanks Matt, very spooky that I should stumble across this thread today when we were only talking cars just last night!

My car is not up for sale as such, however I would entertain sensible offers (around £11k) from interested parties as I've always got it in mind to change to something a little more day-to-day.

If you'd like full details then please PM me your email address and I'll send them on. But in brief (very brief) it's a MY99 STI5 Type R on an X plate, Tek3 by Bob Rawle (320bhp), Whiteline chassis tweaks by Powerstation, Defi gauges by Powerstation (2 months old), recent cambelt service done (by Rally Colin), and a 100% straight uncrashed 45k miles.

Here's a piccie from Japfest, the only time it's been on a track and it did 5 sedate laps being lapped by everyone else.

Scoobs seem to be a bit like houses at the mo' ...in that, asking price & what they actually sell for can be way out ...i still see cars on the autotrader that i remember from 12 months ago!

Do a search for cars on here that have actually sold ...& also check pistonheads classifides to get a good indication of what the actual market is like

one thing mine and a couple of other people seem to have had probs with, the lip on the rear wheel arch gets chipped and water and rust gets under the paint, it doesnt look much but i had to have the rear 1/4 sprayed to fix it properly so check those wheel arches

Enjoy i loved mine and only moved it on because of the house, by the way Type R's dont all have the DCCD and water spray mine was WRX type R not STI slightly less spec but still very quick, i would suggest getting a shell points card you will have th TV in no time!!

There's a very nice one here too - now reduced to £10750 - may get it a little cheaper.

Cheers

Cheeky sod! I'll have you know my waistline has been massive for years!

If the price is right i'd sell, if it's not I'm more than happy to keep my baby another year.

Make sure it already has had a engine rebuild, no matter the protection measure they still seem to blow between 40 - 50 k miles

Default Quick Survey STI Type R or STi RA or STi Version 5/6

Thank you for all the replies.

A quick survey - just choose one, if you had the money and opportunity to have one of the following (ignoring running costs/rebuilds etc), which one would you go for (Hypothetical Situation):-

1. STi Type R.
2. STi RA
3. STi Version 5/6

All answers and opinions will of course be greatly received (well, opinions might be ignored )

Richard
