Question Drive how far to recharge battery?

My battery is flat and someone is popping round to give me a jump (ooer!).

How far do I need to drive to put a sensible charge back? Someone once told me 12 miles but I have no idea what that is based upon..

Cheers

M

a good 20 mins, but even then it won't last long. will need a full charge.

a good 20 minute spin with no heater blowers, radio etc should do the trick if the battery is ok but this cold weather won't help a old battery.

Yep I'd comply with 20mins, but would be best spent on the motorway for effectiveness. Using any electrical devices during this time (lights, powerful radio) reduces the rate of charge. Bascially do it during daylight if you can.

If it was completely dead then I'd get it going, go for a good run and then try and remove the battery and stick it on charge overnight (if you have a charger that is).

Impreza MY03> have smart alternators which won't charge unless a drain is being put on the battery. I don't know about other cars, many problems with the batteries on newage cars and warranty replacements.

Andy.

Well that was a pain in the bum!

Alarm decided to blow my ears up when opening the door put the interior light on and tookthe last few sconds of charge out of the battery. Then the bonnet cable had seized and I took a big chunk of skin of my fingers when the bonnet pull finally went. Got the jump leads onto my brothers audi and she started first turn of the key. Then for the next 10 minutes I go more and more mucky and more and more cross messing about in the dark trying to get the bonnet catch to go the other way and keep the bonnet down, grrr.

Finally I set off and as I got more and more into my 45 minutes blast I forgave more and more. By the time I put her away again I was like this

I best make sure I start taking it out more than once every 3 weeks or so in the weather and that I lube the bonnet clip/cable.

Fingers crossed shes starts again when I check over the weekend...

Thanks Peeps and goog night...

Take it out and charge it properly, to charge one from flat you'd have to drive over 800miles without any lights/heater/ancillaries running.

I too was shocked when i found this out. I know its true, i work in prototype development and have seen the results of tests like these

Bit obvious, but make sure the battery is topped up with distilled water, before giving it a proper charge.
