Default Me versus Cupra @Santa Pod the Sunday

My first time, I going with my mate who has a Curpa (non R) but chipped to about the same power as a standard Cupra R.
I've got a recently PPP bugeye, anyway I have a few questions

Do you think I'll win (lots of pride at stake)?

What sort of time should I be aiming for?

Will I get into 4th gear?

Waht sort of max speed should I reach?

What the best way to launch (without knackering my car)?

I always doubt BHP figures for 'chipped' motors. My mate had 'chipped' Audi S3 (270bhp) and it could not get away from my MY01 WRX. In a sprint a PPP WRX should beat a Cupra R anyway

Don't ride the clutch, just dump it at 4-5k and floor it. The drivetrain takes a hell of a shock but the clutch will live. Ride it and it will be gone quickly.

you'll have an absolute blast whatever the outcome my first (and only to date) visit to santa pod was a fantastic experience, bricking it on the line, laughing like a baby up the strip and joined the queue straight away to do it all again. you'll love it

to answer your questions:-

should be close, depends if your mate can put the power down.

mid to low 14's?

95-99 mph. fair play if you break into the hundreds

if you don't like your car, 6k revs drop the clutch and slam it thru the gears. i could only bring myself to get to about 4.5k revs and sort of bottled letting go of the clutch completely and fed it in very rapidly.

enjoy

You wanna hope its wet, otherwise that 4wd is gonna be a disadvantage with transmisson losses.
225 in the Cupra could be fun against a 4wd 245 bhp Scoob........

If it's this weekend then the weather forecast looks like it will be nice 'n sunny, but that will favour your mate. If it's damp when you arrive try and get the arguement settled whilst he is struggling with traction. Once it dries he will do well against you in the middle to the end after you've blown him away off the line. Good luck, and enjoy. Let us know who wins

do you know i'm fooked if i can remember!! must have done, only hit 95, 97 terminal speed on my 2 runs (rain stopped play) so that must have been 4th

if it's a busy day you might struggle to get lined up next to your mate, not sure if you can get held back by the marshalls to make sure you race together?

lot's more experienced drag strip peeps on here that might answer that one.

Your odds on favorite to win mate. The major concern is the start. I wouldn't be so sure about just ripping up the clutch although I think doing this at high rpm is quickest.

Isn't it better to slip the clutch than risk gearbox damage? I'd look to dial in 4,500rpm and then bring the clutch up swiftly but not just ripped up so it atleast takes some of the strain. Turbo shouldn't bog down. I'm no expert though and haven't dragged my car but do know what works well on the road without excess risk of damaging the transmission.

Has sata pod got a super grippy surface? if so would dumping the clutch not cause a rather nasty gearbox related disaster in a wrx?

nope Santa pod is slippy as ****! You can't launch, well thats what I've found anyways!
All the cars there just seem to spin and spin and spin, they have much less grip than say a tarmac'd road surface, which makes for some crap launches

I'm sure it has - atleast due to the amount of rubber that would of been laid down on the surfaces. The question is - is risking gearbox damage worth maybe .5 of a second? I'd rather wear out a clutch than need a gearbox rebuild. The gearbox will most probably take it and plenty of people have launched over and over like that but with my own car...

I think the Cupra will be seen off without too much trouble regardless of whether the clutch is slipped a bit or dumped.

Good luck and looking forward to hearing the result.

4.5k is about right to launch at, if you launch higher it will spin, Pod can be a tad slippy.. slip the clutch a little if you are bothered about the box, just raise your foot a bit slower..

I'd say you will get low 14's, if you crack into the 13's well done to you. You'll be changing into 4th just before the line, you won't crack the ton, be in the mid to high 90's, have fun

They won't be going fast enough for the transmission losses to be a disadvantage. The extra grip will more than compensate for the small losses in the lower gears.

Hold 5k rpm and dump the clutch.
change into second as fast as you can.
change up at about 6.5k rpm in the other gears.
you may even need 5th

enjoy it, its a rush

Won't be needing 5th on a quarter mile, you'll be going into 4th just before the line... could even cross the line in 3rd if you don't mind bouncing it off the rev limit tee hee
