18's VS 19's . Opinions on handling??
As above guys,
Im gonna be after some new rims soon , i know i want Supperleggeras and i love to look of 19s but do they really screw the handling that much compared to 18s?
These will be going on an 02 STI Prodrive.
If so exactly what changes? Ride? Grip? Turn in? etc.
Wanting answers from people that actually know from experience, not thay think they know cos they assume it will.

Hi Frayz,
Hopefully my experience is valid even though it isn't about changing from 18" to 19" wheels.
I changed from the standard 17" bugeye WRX wheels to 18" Rota GRA's a few months ago and even though the car looks infinately better, I feel that the car drove better on the original 17's.
The car seems to tramline a lot more now and seems to get pulled all over the place when the road has grooves worn into the surface, (lorry lanes, etc).
The handling doesn't seem to have improved either but perhaps the memory of the 17's has faded and I just can't remember the difference.
Summary:- car looks better on 18" wheels but drove slightly better on 17" wheels.

my experience from other cars, is that going beyond recommendations does necessarily ruin handling but defo deos hinder it. I think the recommendations is 18 for the newage. For a start their heavier, so that wont help.....

Aren't you running 235's..? Probably not helping with the tramlining TBH..!
I've just gone up to 18 super leggs on my 05 WRX and can honnestly say there dosen't seem to be any difference in handling, weight wise the 18" super legg is 1kg heavier (that's new compared to 60% worn 17" brigestones..!)
Going from BS to Proxies T1-r's (225/40 18) probably helped ride quality as well..!
Aren't you running 235's..? Probably not helping with the tramlining TBH..!

Had 19inch Superleggras for about 3 weeks on my 04 WRX and got rid of them as I felt the handling was ruined compared to the standard 17s, Also with the standard WRX suspension the car also looked like it was on stilts.
I now have 18s and I must say they are a big improvement over the 17s and look much better under the arches even with standard springs.

your rims
i would,nt put 19,s on a scoob read thread,s from bmw m3 forums even they recommend keeping to the standard 18,s depends on what your going to use the car for though , my thoughts 16,s that clear big brakes with a semi slick tire oh yes.........

+ its cheaper to buy 19" oz's then 18" PFF7

Im running 19" supperleggera's with eibachs.
IMHO i think it looks the dogs and the handling for me has improved,it does tram line abit,but i think thats to do with the tyres

To be honest mate wouldnt go beyond 18`s and thats impractical enuff as it is with the state of the roads trust me dodging potholes/low grates with 18`s is bad enough with 19`s would have to be even more careful about damaging ur rims,though from a handling point of view dnt think there`d be much in it between 18`s and 19`s,though 17`s are the best for handling anyway. (by the way my 18in pff7 replicas were £800 dnt really consider that expensive)

Had 19's on for two years, ( 02 sti ) doesn't take mid-corner bumps and "air" as well. But silver on a black car looks so much cleaner than gold, supplied with 215/35 Toyo's but replaced with 235/35 as that's what everyone else uses.... Kept my 17's for track day (one day ?) and runs out on the back roads. Not enough negatives to put you off I hope....
