Default TURBO

Hi Everybody,

First time on here, I own a 1994 Impreza WRX pretty much standard apart from HKS air filter decat exhaust system. Im thinking about upgrading my turbo cus the standard one has so much lag, Can Anyone advice me on and upgraded turbo which will spool up alot quicker and give me much needed BHP.

Many Thanks

Wayne

HI wayne b4 you go spending loads of cash on a new turbo, have you

considerd replaceing the cat section down pipe and fitting an after market

dump valve? as this will help with your lag problem.

STi2 intercooler, TD05 and 440cc injectors. Cheap enough from scrapyard. Then a re-map.

My WRX has had both cats removed, but i still using the standard 60mm exhaust, Until next week when im putting on a 4" straight through exhaust. Will it be best to have a remap b4 getting a new turbo?

Thanks

no, fit the turbo and drive it like a really old man until you get it remapped....

if your going to get a remap, you are better off doing all you modifications, then get it mapped with everything on the car, cause if you change anything after it, you will need the map tweakin which is more expense.

If he's after less lag and faster spool, going from a TD04 to a TD05 is not exactly a wise move.

To answer the original post, your goals are a little bit contradictory, unfortunately. If you want to get earlier spool up and less lag by changing the turbo, you need a smaller turbo, which will give you less bhp. If you want more bhp you need a bigger turbo which will give you more lag.

At the moment, if I were to be buying a replacement turbo without making lag worse, I'd look at an Andy F TD04 hybrid - spools as well as a normal TD04, but gives quite a bit more mid and top range power.

In the meantime, as suggested above, changing the exhaust and getting a remap will give you more power and bring the turbo in earlier. Also look at changing the air inlet hose (the one that fits to the front of the turbo) - the standard one is restrictive, and fitting an uprated one brings the turbo in perhaps 100rpm earlier again. An improved intercooler would help a little too. With a well set-up TD04, and suitable supporting mods, you should be able to get most of your boost and plenty of torque coming in at around 2500rpm.

Didn't the 94 WRX have the TD05 as standard?

A TD04 should not feei "laggy" mine starts to spool up at roughly 2500 rpm and as previously stated changing the turbo to another unit wil probably increase the ammount of revs before it starts to work properly.... at what point does yours start to spool up at?you might have other problems

If you take off the heat shield on the turbo, it's stamped quite clearly on the inlet scroll

truroscooby, if you have a pre 96 saloon then you will have a td05. if you have a pre 96 UK wagon you will have a td05. If you have a pre 96 JAP wagon you will have a td04.
Before you start changing turbos you would be better spending your money on a good exhaust system one with preferably a sport cat or full decat. This will improve spool up lots (did for me anyway) Then you could spend some money getting the car remapped. This again will reduce lag and improve power.

Depends, if your wanting short bursts of power over a shortish distance then
the TD04 is ideal, as it spools up quicker and makes it's power a lot quicker
to a maximum output of 280bhp with the right mods

The TD05 is laggier and makes it's power further up the rev range but is capable of around 350bhp with the right supporting mods.

Hope this helps, bigger is'nt always better

ive used both td04 and 5 in my classic and ive gotta say IMO there is not much lag with the td05 and a decat compared to a td04. The td04 did not hold enough grunt at the top end for me and i would always choose the td05 now.
