Default WRX PPP vs other mods

Hi all. I have been contemplating the route to take to mod my car (03 WRX). It occurs to me that Prodrive do indeed have lots of experience and outright figures don't mean everything!

So, I wondered if anyone out there has had the chance to compare a WRX PPP (265 PS at 6000rpm, 348 Nm torque at 3200rpm) with a WRX that has had cat back exhaust, panel filter and remap. I am guessing the non-PPP car would get a bit more bhp, not sure about the torque. However, most importantly, the question is how do they compare on the road?

I have a WRX 01 with Ecutek, HKS Panel, Walbro Fuel Pump and all the cats in place.

262.5 BHP
343 Nm (About 254 Ft Lbs Torque?)

Hope this helps. Powerstation graphs as well.

If you compare specifications like for like, you'll most likely get more elsewhere: the PPP is a generic map, a TEK 3 is cutom to your individual car. Purchasing the equivalent specification and TEK 3 map will also be significantly cheaper.

BUT you loose any hope of extending your warranty.

Hi Blue Dragoon. So you have a completely standard exhaust or do you have an after market backbox? Ever had the chance to 'drive alongside' a PPP car?

IIRC the new age PPP has a decat centre section as well as a BB

PPP is worthwhile if you still have/ care for your warrenty. Other aftermarket goodies will give better gains per £, and with the expense of these cars thats always welcome

Sorry must admit I forgot the WR Back Box. Centre and front cat are still in, running on Tesco 97 RON.
On a recent run from a meet I was more than able to hold my own against a standard STi. Not outright but for £700 ish (Pump, Map, Filter) I was there.
Also, scared the pants of an Evo 6 last night.
Now I really need new brakes. Brembo's anyone????????

I can vouch for Blue Dragoon's car (and performance) as we had ours mapped at the same time and place.

I've had similar done to my bugeye WRX:

HKS panel filter
Decat centre pipe
Magnex backbox
Walbro 255 fuel pump
ecutek3 remap

265bhp and 258lb/ft torque. It keeps up with standard newage STi's without any problems. I've gone head-to-head with a couple of standard newage STi's a couple of times and it's a dead heat, no clear winner.

In a straight line only. Surely?!

Interesting stuff. I would have thought that the tuned WRX would have the upper hand on the standard STi (considering the weight difference). Just goes to show a figure doesn't tell you everything.

With regard to exhausts. Do you know if the STi exhaust has a freer flowing CAT? There are plenty of STi exhausts on eBay going cheap and I wondered whether it's worth it? I'm not bothered about it beig loud.

Nearly forgot. Trap2 and Blue - at what revs are you producing the peak torque? I want to compare to the PPP.

My 05 wrx with usual mods and ecutek (plus sti8 tmic and scoop) virtually identical spec to Andy F's project wrx stage 1.

RR figure don't mean much in the real world, more the shape of the dyno plots. I would confidently put my 276/266 against any 330 bhp scoob largely due to the spool up speed..!

BTW Powerstation rollers are considered to be realistic not optimistic as many others are..

PS when my WRX was standard (appart from centre decat) my brother had a WRX PPP on loan and even swapping drivers there was absolutely no difference in performance at any speed range. I suppose you could argue the PPP was a friday PM car and mine a wednesday car..!

Here's a dyno plot of an 05 wrx with ppp, for what it's worth...
