Default Petrol pump problem

why is it i cant get the pump into the car without major contortions and holding it at funny angles?? when i try to use it normally it keeps cutting out (like when its full). I have a classic ive had for 3 weeks and every time i try to fill up its a pain trying to get the filler into the car.
Is this a common classic scooby issue??
