Assuming you are intending to use a self adhesive numberplate and stick it to the bonnet, then no, it's not legal to do so.
Check out http://www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_number_plates.htm#1 section 26.
In saying that - I've used self adhesive numberplates on trailers for years and never been pulled for it (tempts fate!!!).
