Default Damn those Evo VIII FQ320s

Me and my mate went out again today.

Dual carriage way side by side doing 40 miles per hour, both in 3rd gear cruising along....

Count down to each other .....3...2...1....

Boot it..

By time we get to reasonable speeds.. cough cough... He is a good 2-3 car lengths ahead.

My scooby around 333bhp.
His evo just exhaust and Ecutek map and so much more pull.

Very impressive performance and so hard to match with a scooby without spending so much money. I already spent a good £3000+upgrading and would need to spend another £2000+ to get level with him.

Is it worth it do we think? or best to accept their slightly quicker?

They have a larger twin scroll turbo on a short manifold, longer stroke, higher compression, and they also weigh a bit less than a typical GDB STI (except Spec C). Ratios are also more evenly spaced compared to the 02-05 UK STIs.

They also cost shed loads more to buy, to insure, to maintain etc etc

It's horses for course and my wallet is stretched with a WRX

Fair play..

I just love the noise of my scooby so i cant get equal length manifold.
I just aint a fan on the newage evo styling either.. So sacrifice a little performance for noise and looks.... Alittle vein but ah well.

Its so so much quicker than my evo VI. You really can see the progression in the evo series cause my sti8 eats my evoVI on dual carriage ways.

I would just buy the car that makes me most happy, I personally prefer scoobys so thats why I get one on thursday. Evos to get the good ones are always going to be more expensive anyway. If it is speed and performance and not the styling just think how quick that evo would be with 5k spent on improvements.

I would say the subaru sounds great ( without equal length manifold) and is better lookin in classic form than all the lancers. However the lancers are way more mature/better lookin than the new-age scoob.

Hang on a minute: did you say it was an FQ320 with exhaust mods and a Ecutek map.....in that case, he'd have probably had slightly more than 320 don't ya think?

So he was a few car lengths ahead. Why worry about it?

320 with ecutec and exhaust your looking at 350 /360bhp i would think so its not that suprising really.
im getting 350 bhp with a decat and raised the boost to 1.5 bar running a ralliart ecu.
throttle responce is just the dogs on evos.

Yea we both spent the same money on modifications.

I got the scooby and upgraded ful brake system and got triple 333 pack at TSL so around 333bhp or there about.

He got the Evo and spent couple grand on brakes, exhaust, remapping, induction etc... and his MR320 is running around 382bhp now. So yes the comparison is basically what can a couple grand in mods get you on each car.

Both same age about 11 months old. Both a hell lot of fun hehe.

And therein lies the point. 2 car lengths is not much- there's no need to be dissapointed.

#20 - bet his Evo cost a good few grand more to buy initially than your car though ?

If you both spent the same total - i.e. the extra he paid to buy the car, you spent that much on more mods, then it would probably be a lot closer.

Or just buy a Skyline, throw ridiculous amounts of money at the engine and not much will touch you.

HI lads I own a 2003 sti type uk and my brother owns a FQ320

I have to say that the FQ is a far superior car than the STI but having said that the fq has HKS bits under the bonet, full Bilstine suspention and the car is lighter. so if you spend the extra £5 to 7 k on the STI you will get an STi that will be on par if not beter than it.

I get to drive both on a regular baisis and must say that the fq needs a lot of attention while driving as it is verry twichy.
The interior is a lot more cramped than the STI as well.

Even my brother regrets selling the STI to me as the fq costs soooooooo much to keep on the road. Serivicing every 6k is an expensive job.

So if you have the money and only use the car on the weekends the choice would be the FQ. But I drive to work in the scooby and do some work milage in it so the scooby is a better option for me.

SO BUY ONE OF EACH

Not too sure about that. 2 lengths over, say an 8 second rolling accelleration run, is significant IMO. John banks's post pretty much sums up the reasons behind the result.

Would be interesting to compare the total package costs

I've stayed with my good mates MR340 but then again i've got enough mods to last me a while.......plus launch control does come into it's own off the lights.....rolling is a lot closer though....

And a ralliart VI was my first choice untill I found out the servicing costs......
if he was only 2-3 car lengths in front go on the twisties and let it come down to the driver......

Abd fir all the non believers.....the map booked in for next week and the printout will be put up to shut up....

bloody hell we must be related ....

my big bro has an fq330 which is now pushing 350bhp , i have an 03 sti ppp. Between the two not a great deal in them . the sti is much more a comfortable ride, even though he has changed his suspention from the standard mitsi (very very stiff) to a more relaxed and lower set of eibachs. I do find however that the evo is much more twitchy and handles better, the scoob has a tendancy for the back end to swing round....

When you look at it like that under the conditions in which the contest occurred, maybe.

BUT

What advantage does this translate to in everday driving conditions? i.e. when two cars are not side by side with both drivers in the same gear (which may suit one car more than the other) and on the accelerator at the same time.

I'd argue there would be not much in it in most conditions.
