Guys,
Ive noticed a smell of fuel when starting my 2002 STi PPP. It seem to be coming from the exhaust, and I dont seem to notice it other than when i first start up. Cant notice it inside the cabin. I've only ever put Optimax in the car. Anyone got any ideas what this could be, or is it nothing to worry about?
Cheers
Al

I take it the smell is coming in from the engine area, made worse if you have the heater/aircon on?
Subaru dealers have been issued with a 'service bulletin' about 'petrol smell in cold weather relating to MY02 vehicles' - but it happens to my MY01 WRX.
Do a search on 'petrol smell' and you should bring up threads, including one where someone has helpfully provided link to this bulletin. I have been informed by dealer that the fix relating to this bulletin involves a lot of dismantling in order to get access and put in different length fuel pipes and linkage parts and quoted a price of £250 inc. VAT to do the work.

So far over the last week - since the 60,000 mile service was done - there has been no petrol smells in the start up/warm up stage. And as we know, it's been near freezing for the last week - although it tended to be a combination of 'near freezing temperature and foggy/misty' when the petrol smells were at their worst.
On a different thread, someone said that problem could be solved by changing the fuel filter - which is done as part of the 60,000 mile service.
I'm hoping it was 'changing the fuel filter' that has worked. I will let you know the outcome.
