Unhappy PF7 Replica wheel probs

Now I don't want to be a scare monger or a drama queen.....but

....one of my wheels is cracked

so it might be worth giving yours a bit of a once over if you have them fitted.

although,hopefully mine is just a one-off

not the best of pics I admit, but I noticed that the paint had started to bubble

so rubbed it back with a bit of emery to reveal a crack right thro the width of the web

in the last pic you can make out the area I'm on about. To my knowledge the wheel has had no major hits at all and the car is only used for normal everyday road driving.I'll speak to the suppliers tomorrow.hopefully they won't get 'the ache' too much for me posting on here...and please ignore the centre cap logo!

Hmmm.... iirc Mike Wood did say if the copies have just used the same 'mould' to get the same look they wouldn't be strong enough as the PFF7s are flow formed.

I hope the supplier gives you a good answer (are they from Revolution) as my new set go on an MY06 on wednesday and if this turns out to be a product problem i won't just be asking for my money back as i'll be p*ssed beyond all belief as i got rid of some 18" Prodrive P-WRCs for these!!! But lets see what they say first

Mine are beginning to bubble on the back wheels. Don't know how they are though as the previous owner bought them second hand. Was thinking of getting them powder coated anyway.

Best not to as powder coating wheels can weaken them

That's not how it reads, you wrote 'as if you got rid....' . 'As if' means you were questioning what i said.

Not the place to be dragging this about as it detracts from the main subject which could be quite serious, however i'd read over what you write before posting as you could rub people up the wrong way!

My god a crack right through a web without stressing the wheel, ie without hitting anything is very very worrying.
I would steer clear of these copies, an accident waiting to happen at high speed!

Thats the problem with aftermarket alloys They are generally a load of crap unless you go for the high end stuff like Ronal and the likes who make OEM wheels.

If they didn't go through a stress relieving process before finishing the natural internal stresses following casting are now showing as "stress cracks" Uneven or too rapid cooling in the mould is often a cause.

There are a lot of people who are buying these cheap copies at the moment. Some of you may know how much the importer is paying for them and it really is staggeringly little money for a life or death componant. Cheap copies are cheap for a reason.

Powder coating isn't a high temperature process. I'd very surprised if powder coating posted any threat to an alloy component.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear that this weakens them. How many of us have had alloys blasted? Surely if it does, it must be negligable. Could it be the baking afterwards that weakens them?

Thumbs up

I'd just like to say, that I had a first rate response from both supplier and manufacturer today.

New wheels are on their way and I shall continue to use them.

My cracked wheel is being returned for specialist analysis

....I just hope this is an isolated incident and that I haven't harmed anybody's reputation

Cheers,Jon

I echo what Jon said above, the response from the supplier has been first rate and has certainly calmed my fears.

Fingers crossed for an isolated incident!
